Air Marshal Ian David Macfadyen CB, OBE, RAF was the Lieutenant governor of the Isle of Man until 17 October 2005. He was appointed following a successful career in the Royal Air Force.

Ian Macfadyen was educated at Marlborough College and entered the RAF College Cranwell in 1960. He graduated with the Sword of Honour. His flying career included service as a fighter pilot in the United Kingdom and Germany. He also served as a flying instructor and member of a formation aerobatics team. He also spent time as a squadron commander in the Falkland Islands and as a staff officer. He commanded RAF Leuchars, in Fife, from 1985-87. He served as Commander of British Forces in the Middle East in the early 1990s.

He was promoted to Air Marshal in 1994, and retired from the RAF in February 1999. He was appointed Her Majesty's Lieutenant Governor in the Isle of Man in October 2000.

As Lieutenant Governor, Macfadyen took an interest in the development of young people on the Island. He was Chairman of The Prince’s Trust and also of The Golden Jubilee Trust, which aims to promote better citizenship within the Isle of Man.

Macfadyen is a past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the RAF Museum. He is Chairman of Trustees of the Geoffrey de Havilland Flying Foundation.

He is currently the National President of the Royal British Legion.
