Talk:Human rights education
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This page as it stands is not very useful. Either it's about Human Rights Education (in which case why not make it a section in the article on Human Rights?), or it is about a specific course/programme at the University of Essex (but why should this programme be included in the University of Essex article and not a description of other programmes?). I won't do anything to alter this article, but I can't see the need to clutter the University of Essex article with a Merge banner, so I will delete the merge suggestion from there, but leave it here. The main thing is that this article needs to be sorted to work out what it is trying to say, or it should just be removed. Sangwine 21:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Got rid of the Essex stuff. Now a generic stub. Will write more when I get around to it, hopefully soon. Wl219 10:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

- The whole thing should just be merged to human rights. --Descendall (talk) 06:12, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

- I don't think it should be merged. Article 26.2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states "Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace." and the preamble states "Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction."

- I think if Wikipedia is to have a complete set of articles on human rights, as is the aim of WikiProject Human rights, then there should be an entry covering each or the rights and principles in the UDHR in more detail than the general Human rights article does. There is a lot that could be added to this article relating to the rationale behind including this in UDHR, and the rationale of teaching human rights in different contexts (medicine, engineering, politics etc). This would not be appropriate, because it is too specific, for he Human rights article. Tkn20 (talk) 13:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

- Alright, perhaps you're right. I'm the one who said that it should be merged, but I was really doing it more based on the terrible state of the stub at the time of the suggestion, which was pretty much just a dictionary definition (and not even a very good one at that). I guess plenty more about the UDHR could be added. --Descendall (talk) 04:55, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

- We (staff at Human Rights Education Associates - www.hrea.org) think that there should be a separate Wikipedia entry for human rights education (HRE). We have prepared materials to include - didn't know until today that an entry for HRE had already been started. We're happy to work on this entry, as we have quite substantive content, including rationale, and will be inclusive in terms of references to organizations actively involved in HRE (there are a lot). We plan to cross-reference to the HR entry as well as others already on wikipedia. We will reference Article 26 but also address the worldwide HRE movement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by HREA Inc (talk • contribs) 16:11, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
- This is the problem. Everyone says that they are going to make this article more than a dictionary definition, and in the end nothing ever gets down. --Descendall (talk) 20:57, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Made a start - hopefully Human Rights Education Associates will fill it all out soon(?) - but I think there's enough to justify the article now. Tkn20 (talk) 22:59, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
