The Piasecki HRP Rescuer was an United States tandem-rotor transport or rescue helicopter designed by Frank Piasecki and built by Piasecki Helicopter initially as the PV-3 development aircraft then produced for the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard as the HRP-1 Rescuer. An improved PV-17 variant was produced as the HRP-2.

[edit] Development

The PV-3 development helicopter first flew at Morton, Pennsylvania in March 1945 following a development contract from the United States Navy in February 1944. The PV-3 was followed by two further prototypes designated XHRP-1, one was used as a static test aircraft and the other was used for development flying. In June 1946 a production order for 10 HRP-1 Rescuers was placed with the first production aircraft flying on the 15 August 1947. Eventually 20 production aircraft were built, they were tandem-rotor helicopters with a fixed tricycle landing gear and powered by a 600hp (447kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 engine. The rear fuselage was metal skinned with fabric covering the main cabin area although some were flown without the fabric covering. The aircraft were evaluated by the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps and three aircraft were delivered to the United States Coast Guard with the designation HRP-1G. An improved PV-17 version with an all-metal skinning was developed and 5 were ordered in June 1948 as the HRP-2 and delivered to the United States Coast Guard. The success of the design led to the Piasecki H-21 family of helicopters.
