[edit] Background

It was announced on January 30, 2007 that Bishop O'Hara High School and Bishop Hannan High School would merge and be known as Holy Cross High School for the 2007–2008 school year. Until a single school is built, the O'Hara and Hannan buildings will house grades 10-12 while grade 9 will be placed at Bishop O'Hara. The school opened as a single private secondary school establishment in July 2007 under the consolidation program initiated by the Diocese of Scranton.

The diocese announced that the school's nickname would be the Crusaders and their colors would be silver, forest green and black. The mascot and colors were suggested from student input and decided by the Diocese. James Marcks, previously the principal of Bishop Hannan, became the principal of Holy Cross.

In May 2008, the diocese announced it would be closing the Scranton campus and beginning with the 2008-2009 school year would operate Holy Cross as one campus at the former Bishop O'Hara High School in Dunmore.

[edit] School Activities

The administration is sponsoring Unity Days for different grade levels to remind students of the fact that even though the campuses are separate, the school is, indeed, not.

The first "Unity Day" took place on Friday September 7th, 2007. The students, most of which present were between the ages of seventeen and eighteen, enjoyed outdoor games and a lunch sponsored by the school [1]

Holy Cross also supported the promotion of the arts by performing a stage rendition of the musical Grease. The play starred students Patricia Joyce, Sean McGowan, Erin Canedy and featured other school stage talents including Michael Nidoh.

The school also hosted a cabaret which starred Taylor Rojek, Erin Canedy, and group consisting of talented students of the former Bishop O'Hara Schola.

[edit] Athletics

The bowling team won Holy Cross High School's first school championship.

Holy Cross Team B beat West Scranton in the Scholastic Bowling League Championship. The team consisted of three seniors and two juniors. In addition to the championship, three members of the bowling team won individual awards for high average male, high average female, and high series male.

The Boys Varsity Basketball team captured the 2008 District 2 PIAA championship in the first appearance since Hannan and O'Hara combined to form Holy Cross. Previously, the Bishop Hannan Golden Lancers Boys' Varsity basketball team won the PIAA state championship in 2002.

Prior to the merger, Bishop O'Hara had several successful athletic teams. The O'Hara football team won the Eastern Conference Class A championship in 2006, the golf team won the Jackman Tournament in 1989, the cross country team had an undefeated season and got 7th in states in 2006, the softball team has won several district titles and the PIAA Class A championship in 2001 and the baseball team won district championships in 2004 and 2005.
