Historic Compromise

The term Historic Compromise (Italian:"compromesso storico") most commonly refers to the accommodation between the Italian Christian Democrats (DC) and the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in the 1970s, after the latter embraced eurocommunism under Enrico Berlinguer. The 1978 assassination of DC leader Aldo Moro put an end to it.
Norberto Bobbio was a prominent intellectual supporter of the compromise.

Since the middle of the 1990s. Many former communists and former members of the DC co-operated in the coalitions "Olive Tree" and "Union".
In 2007, the centrist Daisy (PPI - a remnant of the DC - was one of the parties which united in Daisy) and social democratic DS (based on PDS, formerly PCI) merged to form Democratic Party, today widely considered a way to put into practice what Moro preached thirty years before but Cold War politics had prohibited.
