The whole thing sounds a bit amateurish to me, but if they want to spend 0.7 billion dollars investigating a bunch of chemicals, who can stop them?

What I'm really wondering is WHY they're doing this? Are they trying to avoid public exposure to toxic chemicals?

If so, it must be too obvious to mention, because in nearly an hour of on-line research I couldn't find anything about the relation between the HPV program and human health - other than the fact that high production is assumed to be a proxy for high exposure.

Reminds me of the assumption that increased CFC emissions ought to cause increased incidence of human skin cancer. Where are the studies proving this? --Uncle Ed 21:13, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I presumed the reason for concern was not the risk of environmental high exposure but the risk of industrial or transportation-related catastrophe which would then result in widespread exposure of various degrees and types. It is not unusual for industries to transport dozens of tons of some chemicals per shipment, some quite toxic by road or rail. Rmhermen 23:46, Dec 8, 2003 (UTC)
