[edit] Crime fiction vs. Mystery

I noticed you changing the category from mystery writers to Japanese crime fiction writers on several pages on my watchlist. None of these people write crime fiction; they are mystery writers. (The difference, in my mind, being that crime fiction is realistic and mysteries are not.) I'm not sure if there is a Japanese mystery writer category, but that would be a better fit that crime fiction; the traditional mystery is still very popular in Japan, and is a distinct genre from crime fiction. Indeed, that's somewhat controversial issue: crime fiction vs. mystery. I'm not sure that the difference is what you suggest, that is realism vs. fiction. Rather it is Commonwealth vs US terminology plus old vs new terminology. But if you sure that in Japan the distinction is very clear cut please do create Japanese mystery writers category and reclassify the writers. In any case, I have noticed that many Japanese writers of the genre are not classified as such (be that mystery or crime), so if you know of such instances, please include them in either category. I was probably over simplifying. I just meant crime fiction is like The Wire (TV series) and mystery is Sherlock Holmes. I added whatever names I could think of, which wasn't a lot, and moved a few people around according to my grasp of their work. But one of those people was a horror writer, and another a ninja novelist, so the categories have both ended up fairly empty. Doceirias 06:45, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Wow, the more I like, the bigger the mess these categories are. Any clue what the difference between Japanese novelists and Japanese writers is? Doceirias 06:50, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

At least there is no category japanese fiction novel writers:) I agree, it's quite confusing to have both novelist and writers, but some by-nationality have even blah-blah fiction writers. But it's more logical about classification within, as long as a writer has at least one novel/story/manga whatever that falls into the category it's OK to classify him/her as such no matter the rest of the output. (At least that's my understanding of categorization guidelines). Fairly empty categories it's no worries, I will definitely add more in crime fiction one soon. I is a shame you call you new categories "Crime fiction novels" etc this seems out of keeping with the "Crime novels" category is links with. The "fiction" element is largely redundant. I'm leaping to the conclusion that you may be a Carter Dickson fan <grin>; if you could add a plot summary to The Reader is Warned, and then remove the unreferenced tag, I'd be grateful. Thanks for the information; as you can probably tell, I use formats based on what I see others doing, not out of a deep understanding of the underlying concept. I'll continue to change the Heinemann and Morrow entries in Dickson articles to match your format as I go, and now I'm piling up Carr novels preparatory to starting to create pages for the main body of his work. Now that I've created a navbox for Nero Wolfe and Philo Vance, I thought I should thank you for the good example of Henry Merrivale... the users appreciate them. It's made me more anxious to get all the pages in place for Ellery Queen and John Dickson Carr so that I can use my newfound navbox-creation skills, then on to Perry Mason ... Thanks! Any chance you're going to work on Love Letters? While I wrote Oroonoko, I have steadfastly refused to do any more with Behn. The Behniacs and I don't get along. Not enough intellectual rigor, too much passion there. I've read all of Love Letters, and I think it's Behn's best/only actual novel, and I also think it's far superior to that one scene that everyone talks about, but I'm resolutely not going to write a byte on the subject. That doesn't stop my wishing that others would. It's just not a battle I want to fight here, as well as elsewhere. Geogre (talk) 14:10, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you have removed two categories from that article. First you called that action "recat", at a later point you called it "refined cat". Honestly, I don't understand any of this. Could you please explain?

Thanks for your answer. What I don't quite understand is why in one instance—British versus English novels—you moved the article from the "parent cat" to a more specific one while in the other—crime versus detective fiction—your move was in the opposite direction. As I see it, Gervase Fen is clearly a detective, and Love Lies Bleeding undoubtedly a detective novel. Best wishes, <KF> 22:51, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Removal from British books category

Hi. What's your rationale for removing books such as Send for the Saint from the British books category? Is there a redundancy, or has the category been renamed or killed? I ask because you only changed about 5 of the 50 "Saint" articles, so if there is a more appropriate category I'll need to know so I can update the others. I also note that you removed Octopussy and the Living Daylights but not, say Casino Royale (novel), although that one is listed under British novels, a different category. Just curious -- is "British books" being restricted to non-fiction work only? If so, it's should be renamed "British non-fiction books". Cheers. 23skidoo (talk) 23:42, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi HM -- You removed Category:Horror from Category:Science fiction studies. The definition of science fiction studies includes horror, and there is no more distinguished "horror studies". [edit] Ace Doubles and van Vogt

Hi I noticed your recent changes to List of Ace double novels and List of Ace SF Double Titles. However, I think you may have meant to do something else. I believe that The Weapon Makers was published as Ace Double D-94 under the title One Against Eternity. The link you changed for The Weapon Shops of Isher was for Ace Double D-53 and is actually a different novel. There is a good site with scans of Ace covers [1] where you can see the two covers in question.
