Heitz Wine Cellars is a winery in California’s Napa Valley with 350 acres (142 ha) of vineyards including its “Martha’s Vineyard” in the Oakville AVA and "Bella Oaks Vineyard” in the Rutherford AVA. The winery was established in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz. Joe Heitz received bachelor and master’s degrees in viticulture and enology from the University of California at Davis and established the viticulture program at California State University, Fresno.

The 1970 Cabernet Sauvignon from Heitz Wine Cellars Martha’s Vineyard appeared in several wine tastings, including the Judgment of Paris and subsequent 'rematches'. The results for the Heitz wine were as follows:

  1. In the San Diego Wine Tasting of 1975, 28 experienced wine experts rated blind eight Bordeaux and two California Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1970 vintage. Heitz 1970 placed 1st out of 10 wines.
  2. In the Judgment of Paris, the Heitz 1970 placed 7th out of 10 wines.
  3. In the San Francisco Wine Tasting of 1978 the Heitz 1970 placed 2nd out of 7 wines.
  4. In the French Culinary Institute Wine Tasting of 1986, the Heitz 1970 placed 7th out of 9 wines
  5. In the Wine Spectator Wine Tasting of 1986, the Heitz 1970 placed 1st out of 10 wines.
  6. In the 2006 Judgment of Paris 30th Anniversary tasting, the Heitz 1970 placed 4th out of 10 wines.
