The Hebereke series (へべれけ) is a video game franchise developed by Japanese company Sunsoft which first began the series on 20 September 1991 with the game titled Hebereke for the Nintendo Famicom, and in 1992 released on the Nintendo Entertainment System only in the UK and Australia under the moniker Ufouria: The Saga altering many of the characters in the process. 'Hebereke' is one of the characters and the Japanese name is colloquial and roughly translates to 'drunk' or 'untrustworthy'.

When sequels were released each almost every title was a different genre, much like the Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun series, Dizzy series and Mario series and can be more considered spin-off games.

[edit] Spin-offs

Developer Sunsoft used the characters and world feature in Hebereke in a series of other games for Super Famicom (Super NES), Sega Saturn, PlayStation, coin operated arcades and more recently mobile phones [1][2]. Almost all of Sunsofts games that feature the Hebereke characters were used in titles that were very different from each other.

[edit] Titles

Ufouria (Europe) (character changes)
Re-released on Sunsoft Memorial Vol.5 (PlayStation)
Hebereke Station Popoitto (Value 1500) (2001)
Hebereke's Popoitto (1996) (Europe)
Hebereke Station Popoitto (SunKore Best) (1999)
Hebereke's Popoon (Europe)
Hebereke's Popoitto (1995) (Europe)

Note 1: different from the SNES game despite a similar title.

A game was developed to be released on PlayStation and Arcade in 1996 titled Hebereke's Pair Pair Wars but was never fully completed. Arcade cabinets have been found that have unfinished versions of the game. Unfortunately most of these have been destroyed in accidents.

[edit] Cameo appearances

  • Hebereke makes a cameo appearance in Sunsoft's Mega Drive port of Lemmings, appearing in level 18 of the "Sunsoft" setting - SUNSOFT Special.
  • Oh-chan starred in a series of nonogram puzzle games titled Oh-chan's Oekaki Logic
  • Oh-chan also appears on one of the courts in Yeh Yeh Tennis (Wai Wai Tennis 2 in Japan) for the PlayStation

[edit] Original soundtrack

A soundtrack was released that features arranged versions of the music from the various Hebereke games. Some songs are from another Sunsoft game, Gimmick! (Mr. Gimmick in Europe). The album was titled Takusan Hebereke and was composed by Naoki Kodaka, Phaseout & MuteC, Masashi Kageyama and arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto. It was published by DATAM Polystar and released on the 25 June 1994.
