Talk:HeadCase Mind Mapper

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I copied the basic format as far as possible from the MindManager entry, but the details are obviously different and are taken directly from the developer's own information on the app. I'll make a stab at rendering the text more objective, but it probably needs a second or third head.

Added links from other Mind Mapping-related entries yesterday, as per tag, including both-way links to the other commercial Mind Mapping apps on wiki. Another user has since deleted the links from the NovaMind entry but not either of the others linking back to NovaMind. Surely a neutral approach would be for each software to list the others reciprocally as a "see also"? — Evolvon 23 October 2006

That would have been me. My failure to remove all the links was an oversight, not an attempt to be unfair. Actually, linking back-and-forth between competing products is generally seen as internal spam rather than useful. This is because "See also" links are supposed to be to topics that directly pertain to the subject of the article. The appropriate way to collect together related software such as this is by using categories or linking to the "List of" article as has already been done. — Saxifrage 18:20, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

This probably leaves HeadCase floating around without any links again. I added the links because the tag I found the day after I created it said the page was not linked to so I added links where they seemed appropriate. There was a list of concept mapping software but I did not add HC to it because it is not a concept mapping app yet - although it seems to be heading that way. So I've created a further list of Mind Mapping Software which is also not yet accepted. How about linking all the entries for applications to the concept-/mind mapping app lists on an equal footing and removing the redundant list from the Mind Map entry and replacing it with the same link? Then there would be one master list for mind mapping, one master list for concept mapping, and all apps would be treated neutrally. Also, a page for FreeMind seems appropriate. — Evolvon 10:22, 24 October 2006 (GMT+1)

I didn't know we didn't have a List of mind mapping software yet, and I don't see any reason to not have one. By the way, what is the name of the list you did create that didn't get "approved"? (As far as I know, there is no approval process, so perhaps something else is going on that I can help with.) In general, I think your outline for how to organise these sets of software is a sensible one.
(We do have a page for FreeMind actually.) — Saxifrage 02:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I found the FreeMind page afterwards - duh. The list I created is just called List of Mind Mapping software, but it doesn't turn up in a Search, the same as the HeadCase page. I assumed it had to be okayed for quality before it appeared? If you think it acceptable, I'll make the changes I described when I get back next week - I'm just off for a few days. — Evolvon 9:33, 25 October 2006 (GMT+1)

Not turning up in Search is just a technical issue: the Search function can't use the main database because it would make Wikipedia grind to a halt (more often than it already does), so it uses its own index that's updated from the main one every few days or so. Yeah, go ahead and make those changes! — Saxifrage 15:11, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
