Harvest Moon 3 is a farm simulation video game for the Game Boy Color developed by Victor Interactive Software, part of the long-running Harvest Moon series of video games. Harvest Moon 3 is the last game for the Game Boy Color in the series, and also one of the most distinctive. Its original Japanese release was on two separate cartridges (one for the Boy side and one for the Girl side), but was combined into one single cartridge for overseas release.

The character may be chosen as a boy or a girl. The beginning and ending are different depending on which character you choose. The boy is a successful Rancher, living on the farm from Harvest Moon 2, who is asked by the mayor to help a girl on a nearby island run the farm of her father's. The girl's beginning shows her trying to save Harry's farm by taking control of it. She then meets the boy character.

Harvest Moon 3 takes place on an island, which has some mountainous regions, a grassland, a small village, and the farm where a lot of the game takes place. There are no shops to buy things like tools, crops, and animals; every Monday and Thursday a ferry is available to take the character to the mainland, where all of the shops reside. This is an element unique to Harvest Moon games, as most allow players to buy things whenever they desire.

Growing crops and raising livestock are among the prime tasks in Harvest Moon 3. But, as with many other HM games, the player has the opportunity to marry his/her partner, and even have a baby. There are some differences between playing as the male or female character; the girl starts out with a free cow and a brush, but cannot upgrade tools, when the boy character can. The male also has more stamina than the female. Also when you marry as the girl, your game ends, but as a boy, the game continues.

[edit] Gameplay

There are four types of animals available; before the player can buy one, a certain amount of fodder must be stored in the storage silo. Room for eight of every type of animal is available, and each stable has a pasture, which is where grass should be seeded, grown, and cut to form fodder to feed animals.

[edit] Chickens

As they are the cheapest livestock, Chickens can be a primary source of income. Chickens as well as Roosters are purchasable. Chickens will lay sellable eggs, and Roosters can fertilize eggs, allowing them to be incubated and hatched, making a new chicken. When a Chicken's affection (a scale of one to ten hearts) reaches ten, it will become a Golden Chicken and lay golden eggs, which sell for more than standard eggs. A mayonnaise maker can be bought to turn eggs into mayo.

[edit] Cows

Cows bring in the most of all animals, and are also the most expensive animals. Cows need to be brushed, fed, and talked to every day. Adult female cows can be milked, and the milk can be sold for profit. Male cows can be bought to have a baby. Depending on a cows affection, it will give off larger amounts of milk, selling for more money. A Butter Maker and a Cheese Maker can be bought to turn milk into butter and cheese, respectively.

[edit] Sheep

Sheep can be sheared to obtain their wool, and wool can be sold, or made into yarn and sweater with the Yarn and the Sweater Maker. Both male and female sheep can be sheared, even if they are sick (chickens' and cows' produce can only be gathered if they aren't sick); although Sheep can get sick, which makes them unhappy.

[edit] Horse

After buying a saddle, horses can be ridden. Horses do not produce anything sellable like the other animals, but they can be bred and sold. A horse's body and hair color are random when they are bred or bought. There are three colours, white with blue hair, brown with yellow hair, and black with orange hair.

[edit] Pets

There are eight pets available in the beginning:

  • Big Dog - Protects your animals
  • Medium Dog - Same as the big dog, only different in appearance
  • Tiny Dog - Same as the big dog, only different in appearance
  • Black Cat - Appears as a grey cat during the game, randomly finds spring seeds
  • White Cat - Appears as a pink cat during the game, randomly finds summer seeds
  • Spotted Cat - Appears as a brown cat during the game, randomly finds fall seeds
  • Pig - Sometimes finds little bits of money
  • Bird - Randomly finds seeds

The player's pet does not impact the story too much, although if you have a cat, early on the game it will run away/ be taken (don't worry they will come back the next day, but if you want to solve the crime talk to people in the morning, and at sun set.)

[edit] Tools

There are a variety of tools, some familiar from previous Harvest Moon games, some new.

  • Axe - for chopping tree stumps
  • Sickle - for cutting tall grass and weeds
  • Hammer - for breaking rocks apart
  • Hoe - for tilling soil
  • Watering Can - for watering plants
  • Shovel - for digging a hot spring, and irrigating the farm
  • Brush - for brushing animals
  • Miracle Gloves - for sending produce to the shed, which sometimes seems to do nothing
  • Scarecrow - prevents birds from eating plants overnight
  • Sprinkler - place near the water for automatic watering

[edit] Reception

IGN rated the game at 7.0, or "decent", saying that the game has colorful graphics and deep gameplay, though the use of sound effects was not the best.[1]
