From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hans Raj College is one of the best colleges in the University of Delhi. This co- educational Institute offers quality education in all the three streams- arts, science and commerce. Hans Raj College was founded in by the D.A.V. college managing committee in 1948. It offers hostel facilities to the male students. It is located at Mahatma Hans Raj College Road, at the heart of Delhi University’s North campus.
Being an extended college, Hans Raj has more than 3000 students on its rolls, and the daily college schedule therefore extends till quite late in the afternoon. Also, apart from Bcom (hons), Geography, Political Science, and History, Hans Raj offers undergraduate courses in a maximum number of disciplines as compared to any other affiliated colleges of the University of Delhi.
"Hans Raj College has occupied a prestigious place on the educational map of Delhi ... many of its students and teachers have figured among the best in the country." A.B. Vajpayee, Former Prime Minister of India
"Hans Raj College has the benefit of bright and humanitarian teachers on its staff and has produced many brilliant students who have made a name for themselves in various walks of life." Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Ex-Minister HRD, Govt. of India Hansraj College has equipped itself with Delhi University's first-of-its-kind electronic shooting range. And that's not all, the college has also decided to offer the sport (shooting) to girls. Female shooters seeking admission to Hansraj will now be able to do so by clearing their respective trials.
The college recently inaugurated its ten-meter pistol and rifle shooting range, which has been established with the help of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). "The stations and points of the range have all been imported from Austria, and are sponsored by NRAI," said M P Sharma, sports head, Hansraj College.
Apparently, the need for an electronic range has been felt for quite some time now by student shooters playing national and international matches. "Students playing international matches often complain that techniques in India are outdated. So an electronic range was our first choice," informed Savita Kochhar, a sports coach at the college.
In a manual shooting range, the shooter must set the target by-hand and then repeatedly reposition it for further shots. The process takes both, time and effort. Justifying the need for an electronic shooting range, Sharma stated that a manual range disturbs the hand-eye coordination of a shooter.
In foreign countries, all shooting ranges are electronic and this helps our students perform better abroad. The shooting range, which has a total of six stations, has also received an imported pistol and rifle worth two lakhs from politician Naveen Jindal, an alumnus of the college.
As for female shooters, "We will form our all-girls team from the next academic session. This is the need of the hour and no longer can one afford to be gender biased. And now that we have a new electronic shooting range, we can easily cater to larger number of students," said Sharma.
