Hammond is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 1,207 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from early land owner Abijah Hammond.

The Town of Hammond is in the northwest corner of St. Lawrence County. The Village of Hammond lies approximately centrally within the town.

The Town of Hammond was formed in 1827 when portions of the Town of Morristown and the Town of Rossie were combined. Subsequent small alterations in the town lines affected the neighboring Towns of Rossie, Macomb, and Morristown.

The latitude of Hammond is 44.441N. The longitude is -75.743W. Elevation is 381 feet.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 77.9 square miles (201.8 km²), of which, 62.2 square miles (161.1 km²) of it is land and 15.7 square miles (40.6 km²) of it (20.13%) is water.

The northern town line is the international border of Ontario, Canada, defined by the St. Lawrence River. The western town line is the border of Jefferson County.

New York State Route 37 is a north-south highway in Hammond. New York State Route 12 follows the south bank of the St. Lawrence River.

The community is in the Eastern Standard time zone.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,207 people, 500 households, and 339 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.4 people per square mile (7.5/km²). There were 1,371 housing units at an average density of 22.0/sq mi (8.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.18% White, 0.50% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 500 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,313, and the median income for a family was $30,114. Males had a median income of $24,135 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,998. About 15.3% of families and 19.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.1% of those under age 18 and 19.5% of those age 65 or over.

  • Chippewa Bay -- A bay of the St. Lawrence River.
  • Chippewa Bay -- A hamlet on the shore of Chippawa Bay, located on NY-12.
  • Chippewa Point -- A location by Black Bay at Black Lake.
  • Crossover Island -- A St. Lawrence River island in the north part of the town.
  • Eric Corner -- A location south of Chippawa Bay, located on County Road 6.
  • Hammond -- The Village of Hammond is in the northeast part of the town on NY-37 at the junction of County Road 6.
  • Hemlock Island -- An island in the St. Lawrence River by the northwest corner of the town.
  • North Hammond -- A hamlet north of Hamlet village on County Road 3.
  • Oak Island -- An island in the St. Lawerence River near Shermerhorn Landing.
  • Oak Point -- A hamlet on NY-12 along the shore of the St. Lawrence River. The community is located near a projection into the river called Oak Point.
  • Oakvale -- A hamlet southeast of South Hammond, south of NY-37.
  • Schermerhorn Landing -- A hamlet southwest of Chippawa Bay village on NY-12.
  • South Hammond -- A hamlet southwest of Hamlet village on NY-37.
  • Mink Island -- A small island located between Oak Island and the mainland at Schermerhorn Harbor. A unique community of 13 cottages.
