Gregory Richard John Matthews (born December 15, 1959 in Newcastle, New South Wales) is a former New South Wales and Australian cricketer.

He was a all-rounder who bowled off spin. He played first class cricket between 1982/83 and 1997/98 and is now a television commentator.

Matthews played 33 Test matches for Australia between 1983 and 1993. He scored 1,849 runs, hitting 4 centuries at an average of 41 and took 61 wickets with his off spin. He also played in 59 One Day Internationals. Greg is known for his off-beat personality, which possibly shortened his Test Match career.

A highlight of his career was the 5-103 (10-249 match figures) in the 1986 Tied Test in Madras, India, wearing a sweater while others were suffering from heat exhaustion. The match was played in around 40 °C temperature with 80% humidity. Matthews described the stadium as being like a concrete bowl which radiated the intense heat.

He was a gritty batsman and fine fielder and is also the current New South Wales leading wicket taker with 417 career wickets.

Matthews was also involved in a high-profile "yeah, yeah" promotion for a hair regrowth company, Advanced Hair Studio. Other cricketers including Graham Gooch, Martin Crowe and Shane Warne have also been involved in the promotion of the product.

During his youth Matthews attended Ermington Public School[1] and played for the Rydalmere Cricket Club, where he won the Under 11s Northern Districts Cricket Association Cricketer of the Year Award in 1970/71 and 1971/72[2].
