The Greens (Verdi–Grüne–Vërc) are a green and social-democratic Italian political party active in the the Province of Bolzano-Bozen. They are the provincial section of the Federation of the Greens, although being much more moderate and mainstream. The party leader is currently Franco Bernard.
The Greens have their roots in the New Left and the environmental movements of the 1970s. They began to compete in elections in 1978, but were formally registered as a party only in 1996. One of the founders and most active members of the Greens was Alexander Langer, who tragically committed suicide in 1995.
The Greens are a mixed party and strive to improve the relationship between the three language groups of the Province: Italian, German and Ladin. This is also reflected in their careful division of political mandates between the different linguistic groups and the sexes. They are highly successful in provincial politics and are currently the third-largest party with three representatives in the Provincial Council.
In the 2004 European Parliament election, the Greens won 13.1% of the vote in the Province and Sepp Kusstatscher, a former member of the South Tyrolean People's Party, was elected MEP, replacing Reinhold Messner.
