[edit] History and development
Greektown Casino has abandoned plans to build a 26-story hotel tower at Gratiot and I-375. Instead, it will stay in the Greektown district. Site preparation for the new hotel which included demolition of a city-owned parking garage started in June of 2006. Construction began in October 2006 with a completion date of 2008. The new design (after two redesigns) will include:
- a new 13-story, 3,500-space parking garage at Monroe and St. Antoine
- a 30-story, 400-room hotel attached to the parking garage
- 25,000 square feet (2,300 m²) of convention space
- spa
- 1,200-1,500-seat theater
- 25,000 square feet (2,300 m²) of additional gaming space built over Lafayette to bring total gaming space to 100,000 square feet (9,300 m²) .
On the 31st of May 2008, the Casino owners, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection.[1] The move will allow the Casino to reorganize their debt and proceeed with present expansion, according to the Casino owners. The move doesn't effect current casino operations, the temporary casino will continue to operate and the permanent hotel and casino will be built during the period of bankruptcy protection which is a legal measure that allows a company to refinance debt without threat of foreclosure to lenders.
