Great Southern Railway (Australia)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Great Southern Railway (GSR), owned by Serco Asia Pacific, is a tourism business and rail transport operator in Australia.
GSR operates three trains:
- the Indian Pacific (Sydney-Adelaide-Perth)
- The Ghan (Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin)
- The Overland (Melbourne-Adelaide)
There are also plans to start operating a fourth train named The Southern Spirit at an indeterminate date. Although there are plans to launch the train from Sydney to Darwin sometime in 2008, with the final route yet to be announced. It is rumoured that the main focus of the service will be utilising GSR's new 'Platinum Class.'
In 1997, GSR took over the operation of these passenger trains from Australian National. In recent years Pacific National has provided hook and pull (locomotive haulage) services for the trains.
