Location of the town of Grabow within Ludwigslust district | |
Grabow (IPA: [ˈgʁaːbo]) is a town in the district of Ludwigslust, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is situated on the river Elde, 7 km southeast of Ludwigslust, and 34 km northwest of Wittenberge.
[edit] History
Grabow was originally settled, together with Blumenthal, in what was then the Prignitz, in the early 13th century by the Counts von Plotho using their vassal by Nikolaus von Blumenthal, of Blumenthal and Grabow (after which the new settlement was named) in the diocese of Magdeburg, as Locator. The two estates passed to his son in law, Ruthger von Amendorf. The latter's heirs, Ruthger and Gerhard, were the respective originators of the later von Blumenthal and von Grabow families.
Grabow received town charter in 1252 by the Count of Dannenberg.
The historical center of Grabow is distinguished by its close core of timber-framed houses of the 18th century.
