[edit] The beginning

Assistance for practice teaching for the trainees of Teacher’s Training College-was the main reason behind the establishment of Government Laboratory High School. From this point the main organizer of setting up the institution was Muhammad Osman Gani, the then principal of Teacher’s Training College. The person inaugurate the school was Muhammad Shamsul Haque, the then Director of Department of Public Education (D.P.I.). The very first headmaster of the school is Khan Muhammad Salek. Starting from 1961 he successfully served his duty for the following 12 years. Below is the list of teachers with whom the school started it’s journey:

  1. Khan Muhammad Salek (headmaster)
  2. A. B. Mofizuddin Ahmed (assistant headmaster)
  3. Sirazul Haq Khan
  4. Muhammad Zafar Ali
  5. Abdur Rashid
  6. Muhammad Zahirul Huq
  7. Muhammad Nurul Islam
  8. A. B. M. Nurul Islam
  9. Muksedur Rahman Hawladar
  10. Muhammad Sharifuddin
  11. Khabir Uddin Ahmed
  12. Muhammad Waliullah
  13. Muhammad Sadat Ali
  14. Sri Suranjan Dutta

[edit] Information about the school building

The present School building and the foremost one are not the same. The first floor of front side of the building was expanded in 1986. Auditorium and college building were set up in 2005-06 (the academic function of the college has just been started in 2006-07 session). The green field in front of the school building covers nearly 150000 square feet area.

[edit] Monogram and uniform

A quote from the holy Quran “nurun ala noor” meaning “light more light” is the motto of the school. The motto is also used in the monogram. This line was also quoted by the legendary German litterateur Goethe. The designer of the school monogram is the great artist ‘Shilpachrya’ Zainul Abedin.

There is a rule of wearing uniforms for the school boys. The uniform is white shirt with navy blue half pant and white keds for the boys of class 1 to 4. On the other hand white shirt with navy blue full pant and white keds for the boys of class 5 to 10. The school monogram should be printed on shirt’s pocket.

[edit] Class and section system

According to the root plan the school should have started it’s program from class 3. But for special eagerness from both Muhammad Osman Gani and Khan Muhammad Salek class 1 and 2 were also included. At the very beginning class 9 and 10 were absent. Gradually they also were added. From 1991 two shifts were introduced: morning and day. Presently all the classes from 1 to 10 are running. There are four sections in each of the classes-‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’. ‘A’ and ‘B’ are in morning shift. Accordingly ‘C’ and ‘D’ are in day shift. There should be 60 students in each of the sections according to the present system.

[edit] House culture and tiffin system

The students are grouped in four houses to facilitate various types of competition. The houses are named after four great legends, Al Beruni, Al Mamun, Omar Khayam and Salahuddin. The four legends represent four different human qualities: Al Beruni- scholarship, Al Mamun- good governance, Omar Khayam- youth and Salahuddin- bravery. The symbolic colours of the houses are yellow, blue, green and red accordingly.

There is a system of distributing tiffin in the school. The system was introduced first in January, 1962. ‘singara’, ‘samucha’, ‘nimki’, banana, bread, egg, sweets and other various items are served as tiffin. For this a particular amount of money is taken from the students with the academic fees every month.

[edit] Library

The school has a rich library with over 5000 books. Most of them were bought by coeval sanctioned money during the establishment of the school. Beside those many others were bought by annually approved money. But the fact of regret is that by an order declared by the government the post of ‘librarian’ is cancelled in all government schools. So it is unfortunate for the students that although they have a library, they do not have access to that. The teachers are just plain kutta magis and baaler chat[citation needed]

[edit] School day

The birthday of the school is 3rd September. The day is celebrated as the ‘school day’ in the school. The usual academic programs are put off this day. Various functions are organized in each of the sections. Students decorate their classes with balloons, posters, pictures, colorful papers etc. They also publish wall magazines which are adorned by the stories, poems and others things of their own. Teachers and guardians admire their works. Students sometimes give invitation letters to their teachers to visit their room. Sometimes birthday cake is cut celebrating the birthday of the school.

[edit] School magazine

The name of the school magazine is ‘Anushilan’. ‘Anushilan’ was first published in 1963. The editor of that number was Kazi Nurul Huq. In present the custom is going on but magazine is not published regularly every year.

[edit] Admission

Under the control of Directorate General of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka admission tests of all the government schools of Dhaka city are taken. The schools are divided into three groups: ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. Government Laboratory High School is in group ‘A’. Usually students are admitted in class 1 and 6. Admission can be considered in other classes if vacancy is created. Admission test is taken usually in the first week of January.

[edit] OLsA

There is an organization of the ex-students of the school named OLsA (Old Laboratorians Association). The aim of the organization is mainly to organize reunions amongst the ex-students of this school.

== Co-curricular activities ==

There are several clubs and organizations to help co-curricular activities. There are functions of Scout, B.N.C.C. and Red Crescent. The notable clubs are L.S.C(Laboratorian's Science Club),D.C.L.(Debating Club of the Laboratorians) and Q.C.L.(Quiz Club of the Laboratorians).
