Govardhana matha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Govardhana matha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Govardhana maţha is located in the city of Puri in Orissa state (India), and is associated with the Jagannath temple. It is one of those four cardinal mathas said to have been founded by Adi Shankara, and is the eastern matha. As per the tradition initiated by Adi Shankara, it is in charge of the Rig Veda.

Its current head or Shankaracharya is Nishcalananda Sarasvati. He was appointed by his predecessor Niranjandev Tirth [1]in the early 1990s.

[edit] Adhokshajanand

A person named Swami Adhokshajanand (or Swami Adhokshanand) has occasionally claimed to be the Sankaracharaya of Puri[2][3]. He was arrested in July 2000 under Section 173, 188, 186 and 204 of the CrPC[4]. He has been debarred from using the title of Jagadguru Shankracharaya of Goverdhan Peeth, and has been prohibitingfrom going within the radius of 1,000 meters of the temple by the court[5].

Adhokshajanand is known for using harsh words unusual for a Hindu monk[6]. He has visited homes of Kashmiri terrorists killed by Indian security forces. In an article in Paigam-Rahbar, he called Palestinians freedom fighters and Israel a "terrorist state".

He spent a chaturmas in Gujarat at the invitation of Shankersinh Vaghela, although later Vaghela claimed that Adhokshajanand arrived there on his own[7].
