Is there a term to define this social phenomenon that I will describe? I have noticed a trend in hand shaking frequently between people. Two people will meet or a group even and there are very subtle ques that we pick up. Without diverting eye contact we sense the other wants to shake hands so we do. They shake hands at the beginning and then at the end of the event. Often it seems excessive and just a mindless habit impulse. Nothing wrong with shaking hands at times as long as you don't think about if the other has been picking his nose or worse but I've noticed lately that it seems to have become more than what has been past tradition here in the U.S. So is there a term for this sort of thing?
