Gorodovikovsk

Gorodovikovsk (Russian: Городовиковск; Kalmyk language: Башнта) is a town in the Republic of Kalmykia, Russia, located on the Bashantenon River, 240 kilometers (149 mi) west of Elista. It is the administrative center of Gorodovikovsky District. Population: 10,500 (2005 est.); 10,940 (2002 Census); 11,902 (1989 Census).
It was founded in 1872 as a Kalmyk settlement of Bashanta (Башанта). It was granted status of urban-type settlement in 1938. In 1971, it was granted town status and renamed Gorodovikovsk after the Hero of the Soviet Union Oka Gorodovikov, who was of Kalmyk origin.
