Gonzalo Segares (born October 13, 1982 in San José, Costa Rica) is a Costa Rican football (soccer) defender, who currently plays for the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.
Segares started in his country playing at Deportivo Saprissa's minor league system, before being awarded with a scholarship to play college soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2001 to 2004, where he was a strong player from his debut, starting all 83 games he played in his four seasons. He registered 16 goals and 10 assists from the back in his four years with the team, was a first-team All-CAA selection his final three years, and was a first team All-American and Hermann Trophy finalist as a senior. During this time he also played with Williamsburg Legacy in the USL Premier Development League.
Following his graduation, Segares was drafted 35th overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the Fire. He had a good rookie season, and was one of the candidates for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award.
Although an important piece in the Chicago Fire starting eleven, Segares has not managed to impress any of the national coaches and has had no participation with the Costa Rican national team. He has finally been called for the National Team, on August 31, 2007, for the matches against Honduras and Canada. Costa Rica head coach Hernan Medford has said he's Costa Rican, and therefore has a right to be called to the "Sele" and that he will be calling all the players who are playing well.
