[edit] About our heroine

Gladys J Cortez is not my name.

I have developed, over the last (ZOMGPONIES, has it been THAT long??!!??) four frakkin years a fairly-complex online identity for myself. Actually, "developed" is a harsh word; I haven't "developed" anything, inasmuch as the life of online-character-Gladys exactly parallels the life of offline, real-life human Not-Gladys. Gladys began as a pseudonym for blogging purposes; I started | my blog in September of 2003, and I had the foresight not to put my real name on it (see below for my reasons). Aside from the name, though, everything is true. I've not made up any credentials for myself, nor claimed any life experiences I've never had; if I claim to know something, or to have done something or experienced something, it's because it's the truth.

[edit] "So why the fake name?"

Mostly, to throw off my Mom's side of the family. I've lived a life of which they would ASSUREDLY disapprove, and lacking me as a target, they'd gladly express that disapproval to my mom, who doesn't deserve the abuse. I haven't spoken to most of them in almost fifteen years, and they really don't know why; they've admitted to Googling my real name, and unfortunately it's a fairly uncommon one; as far as I can tell, only one other person has it, and all HER refs are in German.

Other reasons: so I could bitch about my job in peace (I no longer have the job that required the bitching, and my current job is awesome, so I have very little to bitch about in that regard); so I could have a place to write about some of the less-happy, non-smiley-face-bearing things (those, alas, are mostly still around); so I could be completely honest about how I feel, which--for various reasons--is hard for me in real life.

[edit] "And we should care about this because....?"

Okay. So I'm assuming the low, irritated mutter I'm hearing now is a collective grumble of "So the hell what? You've got a pseudonym. Big whoop." And you're right--this is easily among the least-significant pieces of information to be found on Wikipedia, even less important than any individual Pokemon.

BUT.

  • If I mention an experience I've had--I've had that experience.
  • If I mention a piece of knowledge I've gained--I have that knowledge.
  • If I claim expertise in a given area--well, in that case I'm either drunk off my butt or I'm back on the heroin, because under no other circumstances would I claim to be an expert in ANYTHING, other than the life of Gladys J Cortez. If I do claim some type of expertise, please shout me down or scoff at your leisure, whichever suits your temperament best; by that time I'll probably be cowering under the couch, cringing and wondering "what possessed me to say THAT?" or possibly working to find out who's hacked my account, which would be the only OTHER way I'd use "expert" in relation to myself.

Anyway, that's me. Gladys J Cortez (updated) 22:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

The Barnstar of Good Humor
I can only apologize deeply for your unfortunate experience...I, too, have (rarely) experienced polysyllabic words and manifested unwanted signs of intelligence from time to time, and it's no laughing matter. To ease you back into a more comfortable state: Wigglytuff evolves from Jigglypuff through a Moon Stone. Better? — Scientizzle 01:47, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
