[edit] Already Premiered In New Zealand

I see the world premiere has been announced for TRL but in New Zealand last night it premiered on Music Station C4 days earlier. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 219.88.21.198 (talk) 04:00, 21 February 2007 (UTC).

Even if it's leaked anywhere or premiered elsewhere, videos are often promoted as a "world premiere."

[edit] POV

This article seems severely biased in its positivity towards the song. Mostly, it’s the wording that’s at issue here: “the ever-classic love triangle theme”, “…on YouTube and became a hit” (relatively, plus no citation), “which is the main feel of the song and video: how immature a girl, or girls, can get when fighting for a man that may not be worth it” (this is one possible reading of the song, many people might think that the song’s protagonist [hero] is the girl that stealing the others

boyfriend) "many people-fans and haters alike” (I think this should be prefaced with an explanation or linked, you can’t just use slang like that) Well I’m not going to change it now, but what do you guys think, should it stay the same? Or could it use a change? (70.48.96.7)

Wikipedia is afraid of slang! NOO!

[edit] Sorry

I'm sorry! It looks like the source was wrong. I think Billboard screwed up. Being at it's airplay shot up and donloads shot up should of put it at a top 50 debut! Tcatron565 00:25, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Question - please answer....

I've heard "Girlfriend" on the radio in Southwest Victoria, Australia (on Mixx FM) and on Video Hits on Channel 10 Australia, where Lavigne sings:

"I'll be the mother (Blank)-ing princess"

...which is clearly an expletive. Should I say in the article, "The single also obtained a Parental Advisory sticker"? PLEASE HELP! Jetstar888 05:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You're correct that the single does contain explicit language, but I haven't actually seen a physical copy of the single yet, so I'm not sure whether it definitely does bear a parental advisory label. However, to digress, even if the single does bear a sticker, these days many recordings contain language that may be offensive to some people, so I'm not sure that it's really notable for a Wikipedia article. Besides, the word "fuck" is no longer considered offensive per se, at least by the legal system in NSW, so if Wikipedia editors make a big deal out of such language, we are imposing our own values on what is intended to be an objective article. As far as I can tell, Girlfriend is also the first time Lavigne has used the word "delicious" in a song, but mentioning that in the article would just look ridiculous, so why should "fuck" be treated any different? — Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:25, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Well I apologise!!! Next time, I'll keep my big mouth shut! Jetstar888 05:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC) :_(
Sorry, I suppose that was a little harsh. I didn't mean to offend you, and by all means don't let this deter you from adding something that you feel might be relevant. My comment was not just directed at you, but also at a number of other editors who have been adding information to this article that is not really objective - I seem to recall a couple of times that this article has been altered to mention the offensive language in a fairly judgemental way, and I was just trying to prevent that from happening again.--Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:43, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Your apology is accepted. :-D I suppose that would have been a ridiculous thing to put in the article, anyway!! Jetstar888 04:13, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] itunes

Who took out the itunes on the charts I know that they are not Conventional but digital downloads are important because it a new way of measuring the songs success Avril Lavigne’s girlfriend debuted number 1 in Canada and number 2 in the US

It doesn't really matter that the song was particularly successful on the itunes chart, the point is that Wikipedia policy clearly states that itunes chart data should not be used - see WP:CHARTS. If you think that this policy should be changed, why not raise the issue at Wikipedia talk:Record charts?--Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:47, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for clearing that up, my fault i see what your saying because itunes is an independent company and the page would be overfull with companys such as amazon and wal-mart ect. Does Billbord have a digital download countdown ? If not there should be one.

There are two, Hot Digital Songs and Hot Digital Tracks. They also shouldn't be used in the table. The table is for showing a song's performance in various countries and genres. Using the Billboard Hot 100 gives one a much better understanding of a song's performance since it takes airplay, singles sales, and digital downloads into consideration. ShadowHalo 07:25, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, it might be OK to use either one of the download charts if the single fails to chart on the proper Hot 100, but does appear on one of the component charts - WP:CHARTS indicates this. Of course, once the song does reach the Hot 100 (as it almost certainly will), the component positions become redundant.--Phil500 (Talk / Contribs) 07:33, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Versions

how many versions of Girlfriend she do?

She has released 7 so far in Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian and English. I read somewhere she tried Hindu but it didnt work out

Is is appropriate to use YouTube comments as a citation for "In some of these versions she is criticized for her poor accents."? The Geeklord 02:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Japan

I thought it went to number one in Japan. Did it not ? and if it did way is it not included ?

168.7.240.165 (talk) 18:14, 6 December 2007 (UTC) Plus, this song was also featured very prominently on the show Hana Kimi (or Hanazakari no Kimitachi e) Japanese 2007 version as the background music in its CM and in the last episode. Don't know if this is relevant or not, just want to make sure. By the way, this show is huge in Japan and Southeast Asia.

[edit] Drunk?

Apparently, she was drunk when she wrote this song. Should that fact be included? I can't confirm it though. Rikitana 16:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

You answered your own question. SmallRepair 03:10, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Isn't she drunk when she writes all of her songs? No wait that's Jewel. I didn't say that to be mean, either, it's actually something that's said of her. Well her old stuff anyway, you know, before she sold out. But yeah I liked this song at first but if you listen to the song "I Can Do Better" it sounds almost EXACTLY the same. --DancexwithxmexXx 21:09, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

She doesn't even write the songs-she works with The Matrix, a songwriting team.--69.138.129.63 16:21, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] UK Chart Position

Girlfriend peaked at #2, not #1. Also even if it did, it wouldn't be her 3rd #1. Avril Lavigne has never had a #1 single in the UK.

[edit] Mentioning iTunes?

Should we mention the song's position on iTunes? It is like a music chart, right? I think it is at number 3 right now, but I can't be positive. 67.81.170.159 21:24, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

No, Billboard charts are record charts. The iTunes one is just a list of most downloaded songs on iTunes. Considering the Billboard ones are official charts and already take into account iTunes downloads, there's no reason to include iTunes lists which won't be verifiable in a couple of weeks. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Record charts. ShadowHalo 02:29, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dropping quotation about song

I removed this:

The song is described by Lavigne herself as being "fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way...all the good stuff"

because it was uncited. I searched via google for the quote and found it at [1]. Here is the entire quote:

Lavigne wrote. "The single comes out February and the record in April. I promise you guys will love this record, it is my favorite one!!! And I can't wait!!!!! It is really fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way ... all the good stuff."

This is from her Myspace page. The "It" in "It is really fast,..." does not necessarily mean the song, "Girlfriend" but I take it to mean the album, "The Best Damn Thing." SmallRepair 03:09, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] youtube violation

so what exactly was the violation that took the video down after 3 months? it was the 2nd most watched of all time, and then right before it becomes #1, it gets taken down? weird.

..Oh God i hope not! That remix has got to be the most in-coherent "drunk-guy-with-pro-tools-mix" ever.. It may even take the title for Most retarded/annoying song away from 'Hollaback Girl'! But yes from what i hear apparently they are; I'll try to find a link.. --203.129.38.144 18:31, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Both songs rock!

[edit] Chorus wrote in 2 minutes

Please see here and tell me if this is notable. -Wakkkakakaka363 03:32, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

i love this song and "umbrella"just deadly songs real kinda dancy belting out the chorus in a small room with lots of people kinda song.

[edit] Failed GA

I've failed this article for GA status. Here are some things to improve or fix before renominating:

  • Information about the song's background and a description of the song's music, structure, and/or lyrics are almost non-existent. Of the two sentences that address it, one is unsourced.
  • Much of the Release and chart performance section is unsourced.
  • Many of the chart positions are unreferenced.
  • The references are neither properly nor consistently formatted.

Though I probably wouldn't fail an article over it alone, the use of a Release dates section is dubious. 17Drew 08:26, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend Dance Routine

Is there a dance routine for Girlfriend? I tried everything, I tried googling it, I even looked for it on YouTube.
