[edit] History

The airline was set up in 2004 as a partnership between the Government of Ghana and a group of private international investors, replacing the defunct Ghana Airways that had ceased operations in 2004. An experienced team led by Ralph Atkin, founder of SkyWest in the United States was also installed. The management team also included the former CEO of Kenya Airways – Brian Presbury, as well as Albert Vitale, Sean Mendis and other experienced airline professionals. Ghana International Airlines was designated as the national airline in 2005.

Ghana International Airlines commenced operations on 29 October 2005 with daily flights between Accra and London Gatwick Airport using a Boeing 757 leased from Ryan International Airlines. Seasonal service to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg was inaugurated on 30 October 2006. The airline added a Boeing 767 to its fleet on 15 November 2006 and are now operating a Boeing 757 with winglets.

It is owned by the Ghanaian government (70%) and US consortium (GIA-USA) (30%) and has 168 employees (at March 2008).[1]
