Gewane (woreda)

Gewane is one of the 29 woredas in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Administrative Zone 3, Gewane is bordered on the south by Amibara, on the west by Bure Mudaytu, on the northwest by Administrative Zone 5, on the north by the Administrative Zone 1, on the east by the Somali Region, and on the southeast by the Oromia Region; the Awash River defines parts of the boundary with Administrative Zones 3 and 5. Towns in Gewane include Meteka and Gewane.

The highest point in this woreda is Mount Ayalu; other important peaks include Mount Yangudi. Notable local landmarks include the Yangudi Rassa National Park, which occupies the northeastern corner of the woreda, and the village of Aramis where an archeological site produced remains of Australopithecus.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 36,813, of whom 15,959 were males and 20,854 were females; 12,611 or 34.26% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 27.8%. Information is not available for the area of Gewane, so its density cannot be calculated.^[1]
