[edit] Naming

Georgio PsychoundakisGeorge Psychoundakis - his most common English-language name, used in that translation of his book The Cretan Runner et al., is "George." "Georgio" would be his name in Italian; his name in Greek is Γεώργιος. This traditionally would be transliterated "Georgios," but pronounced YOR-gos in Modern Greek, and thus transliterated "Yiorgos" under the official Greek government transliteration system. I think someone was trying to make his name sound more authentic by moving the page to "Georgio," but it's just plain wrong for anything but the Italian article. Psychoundakis used a code name in the resistance, but it was not "Georgio!" --Jpbrenna 23:28, 25 May 2006

  • I think that Georgio is wrong as well. However, there are many Wikipedia pages that are listed under the original name and the English or more commonly known name is a redirect (unless the person is a famous historical person known with many names in different languages, like Magellan), For example, Hannah Senesh, that is a common spelling of her name abroad and in many history books, is a redirect to Hannah Szenes, the original spelling). With that logic "George" could be a redirect to "Yiorgios" - Skysmith 06:51, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
But Yiorgios Psychoundakis is not the most commonly-used English-language name for Mr. Psychoundakis. Yanni is at that namespace and not at Yannis or Ioannis or John because that is the English spelling and pronunciation he chooses to go by and by which he is most commonly referred to in English. That is not the case for the George in question.--Jpbrenna 17:41, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

I haven't followed this discussion. Because of its nature I have nothig to add. But it pleases me deeply to see how this article has improved whithout being turned upside down. The most important issue regarding the name dispute must be finding him i WP. So it the present solution seems quite prfect to me. Notes on spelling his name in European alphabeth might be put in a small note in the article. It is not very relevant to his life, but still interesting and enlightening. Not many people will find it here. --Frode Inge Helland 12:37, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

nb although the nominative of George is Γεώργιος this would become Γεώργιο in the accusative. Saltmarsh 14:30, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Inconsistancies

  1. Leigh Fermor in his introduction to the Cretan Runner does not mention his part in Psychoundakis's release from prison - is a reference availabkle for this?
  2. There seems an inconsistancy between Psychoundakis turning down (a) payment for service - and then accepting(?) (b)£200. Was (a) a wage and (b) a one off payment?
Saltmarsh 14:37, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
The $200 was not payment, but a postwar recognition of his wartime service for the British intelligence service in Crete, as was his BEM. --Frode Inge Helland 22:03, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Illegal use of the potrait of Psychoundakis

I, the author of the portrait has long ago ordered this photograph deleted, because my claim for licence could not be granted by to WP policy. I wanted to keep the rights. I do not by which rigths this picture has been reinserted. I want it deleted so it can not be reinserted. --Frode Inge Helland 21:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

user:Bastique has now deleted it. --Kjetil_r 22:11, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
