Historic Georgetown Preparatory School is an independent, Jesuit college-preparatory school for young men in grades 9 through 12. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, on 95 acres in the unincorporated, suburban community of North Bethesda in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, just outside the District of Columbia.
Georgetown Prep traces its roots to Georgetown University, which was founded in 1789 by Father John Carroll, S.J., later to become the first Catholic Bishop of the United States. Georgetown Preparatory School emerged as a separate entity in the latter part of the 19th century and is the only Jesuit boarding school in the country. Sponsored by the Society of Jesus, Prep is one of 46 Jesuit high schools and 28 colleges and universities in the United States. Jesuit schools are infused with a five century-old tradition and philosophy of education laid down by the society's founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. While the philosophy is uniquely Jesuit and distinctly Catholic, Georgetown Prep is open to young men of all religious backgrounds. 82% of the boys at Prep play interscholastic sports. Prep provides many sports: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track and Field, Winter Track, and Wrestling. The school's interscholastic athletic, forensic and fine arts programs enjoy national recognition. Approximately 100 of the school’s 450 students are residents.
Georgetown Prep is one of the most exclusive prep boarding schools in the United States[1]. The average senior has taken 5 advanced placement courses with 80 percent of the test scores qualifying for college credit. Prep is regarded as one of the most academically challenging and prestigious private high schools in the country. Since its founding, the school has maintained an outstanding reputation and consistently ranks among the top 10 private high schools and college preparatories in the U.S. As of the 2005-2006 academic year, Georgetown Prep was ranked among the top five best private high schools in the nation in regards to college placement. The average SAT score of a graduate is 1407 (697 verbal, 710 math) under the old scoring system. These averages rank amongst the highest in the country. In 2007, Georgetown Prep was named the most selective all-boys' boarding school in the country [2]. The more popular colleges and universities attended by the graduates of the Class of 2007 include Georgetown University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Stanford University, Yale University, Dartmouth University, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, University of Notre Dame, University of Virginia, and Cornell University [3]. For the 2007/2008 academic year, Day Student tuition is US$24,200, while Resident tuition is $42,150. The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) is an additional $5,570[4].

In 1789, Father John Carroll founded the Georgetown College (later to become Georgetown University). In the 1890s Georgetown College Preparatory School emerged as a distinct entity, and the current school was born. Georgetown Prep purchased land in North Bethesda, Maryland on July 14, 1915, and in 1919 moved from its previous location where Georgetown University now resides. In 1927 the school legally separated from the University.[1] Georgetown Prep is located in a suburban setting near the National Institutes of Health and the Bethesda Naval Medical Center, near the Grosvenor Station of the Washington Metro's Red Line, and is 35 minutes from each of Washington's major airports. As of late, the current physical plant is undergoing significant reconstruction to modernize its 95 acre campus.
In January 2007, Georgetown Prep opened the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence, a state-of-the-art athletic center that features a 200 meter indoor track, 11-lane swimming pool with diving area, competition basketball arena, wrestling room, 6000 s.f. weight training/cardiovascular room, and a team film room. Joe Hills, son of golf course architect, Arthur Hills, redesigned the school's golf course, which reopened in 2008.
The next phase of construction will convert the existing field house into a learning center featuring expanded and modern library facilities, classrooms and meeting rooms.
[edit] Academics at Prep
Prep’s academic program is challenging yet rewarding. Graduation requirements include: four years of mathematics, English and religious studies; three and a half years of social studies; two years of science, Latin and a modern language; and one year of fine arts. Prep offers 24 Advanced Placement classes. With a committed staff of college counselors and a mean SAT score of 1292, Prep graduates attend the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities, such as Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia. The Georgetown Prep school day consists of eight 45-minute class periods. Classes are held Monday through Friday, on a six-day cycle. The school follows a semester system; each term has two marking periods and an examination period. Grades are recorded on the transcript each semester with yearly grades being determined by averaging the two semester grades. Grades are reported on a scale of 60-100; the passing grade is 70. An average is reported on the students' secondary school report. The program of study at Georgetown Prep prepares the student for success in college. The program is preparatory in the strict sense: every student who graduates will have taken all the units necessary for his admission to college. Each student takes six courses each year. All courses which are not Advanced Placement are presented at the same college preparatory level, with the following exceptions: a select group of students is invited to take one or more of the following accelerated math courses: Intermediate Algebra, Summer Geometry, and Algebra 3/Trigonometry. Advanced Calculus BC is offered to those students who have completed the AP Calculus AB course. This course completes the AP Calculus BC curriculum and proceeds with more advanced concepts. A select group of students also pursues an honors track in the sciences: Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics are offered.

Every student at Georgetown Prep is given the opportunity to become a spiritually, intellectually and physically stronger person. Prep focuses on each student as a complete person and encourages him to explore all aspects of human experience. Prep’s Athletic Department fosters an atmosphere that enables the student-athlete not only to be coached in the intricacies of his individual sport, but to learn the values and lessons of life that are closely associated with the Ignatian experience. Varsity, JV and freshmen teams are fielded in football, basketball, lacrosse and soccer. Varsity and JV teams are offered in baseball, golf, track and field, cross country, swimming, wrestling, tennis, indoor track, rugby, hockey. and fencing.

Spiritual formation of our young men is central to Prep’s mission. This is achieved through a combination of religious studies, retreats, personal and communal prayer, and the celebration of the Eucharist, as well as opportunities for service. Over the course of four years, a Prep student will have the opportunity to go on overnight retreats each year, with the highlight being the Kairos retreat in the junior year.
In keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of forming students who will be “Men for Others,” each student chooses a community service project in which he shares his time and particular gifts with those who are less fortunate.

There is much more to Georgetown Prep than classes and athletic competitions, and campus surely doesn't shut down at 3 o'clock. Extracurricular opportunities are unlimited at Prep, from the Prep Players to school publications to Physics Club and more. Students can also create new clubs and activities. These extracurricular activities include the Arrupe Society (Service), Asian Pacific Club, Black Students Union, Booster Club, Chess Team, Computer Club, Dramatics Society, Fencing Club, Forensics Club, International Relations Club, Intramurals, Math Club, Model UN/Model OAS Delegations, National Honor Society, Oasis Music Club, Photography Club, Political Review (Editorial Magazine), Prep Singers, Ski Club, Somos Amigos (Service), Speech and Debate, Student Alumni Association, Student Government, The Blue and Gray (Literary Magazine), The Cupola (Yearbook), and The Little Hoya (Newspaper).
Prep's Resident Program offers students an opportunity they would have nowhere else in the world. The program brings the students and faculty together in a supportive and nurturing environment. On weeknights, students are required to participate in study hall, during which they complete their school work. Following study hall, they meet for group prayer and reflection on the day. On weekends, Prep’s proximity to Washington, D.C. and the Metro transit system offers students the opportunity to explore cultural, educational and recreational activities unique to the nation’s capital. Prep provides interesting activities every weekend for its residents, such as mixers and trips to athletic events.
