George Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George William Frederick Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury, KG, PC (November 20, 1804January 6, 1878) was a British peer.

Brudenell-Bruce was born in 1804, the son of Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 1st Marquess of Ailesbury. He was baptised at St George Hanover Square and his godparents were George III and Queen Charlotte. From 1814 until 1821, he was styled Lord Bruce, and from 1821 until 1856, Earl Bruce. On May 11, 1837, he married Lady Mary Herbert, daughter of George Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke in the same church where he was baptised.

Lord Bruce was Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Marlborough between 1826 and 1829. He became Yeomanry Aide to Queen Victoria in 1857 and was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 1859. He was later Master of the Horse between 1859 and 1866 and Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire in 1863. On May 25, 1864, he was invested as a Knight of the Garter and was Master of the Horse again between 1868 and 1874.

In 1868, he succeeded to the title of Earl of Cardigan after his distant cousin, the 7th Earl died. Lord Ailesbury died in 1878, aged 73 at Lockeridge House, Wiltshire and was buried there. Because he had no issue, his titles were inherited by his brother, Ernest Brudenell-Bruce.
