[edit] older discussion

contrary to a popular idea the practice should be more prevalent in avoiding harassment from certain males Didn't quite understand the meaning. Is there a typo in it? Biblbroks 23:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I got the jist of it, but thought it was still poorly-worded, so in my edit I also changed that wording even though my main concern in editing it was to categorize the poor thing. How is it now? Runa27 21:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

That the term gender-bait should have any relevance to transvestic fetishism or gender identity disorder is not referenced and offensive, so I deleted it since it's probably vandalism by some MMORPG-player who can't stand a male playing a female avatar.

Also, I doubt that the statistic from daedelus is valid in this article since it tells us nothing of who does it to elicit positive response from males or who does it because they find a female character more aethestic/cool/whatever reason.

[edit] Lesbians

Is it worth adding that this also happens to lesbians online (really quite a lot)? Some lesbian chatrooms online can be almost entirely populated by men pretending to be women... Xmoogle 00:44, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Iff you can source it. Otherwise, no. Chris cheese whine 03:05, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] So this is just about a term Gibson used in one of his novels?

Why does this need to exist?P4k (talk) 05:03, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Good question. Well, I had inquired at Talk:Passing (gender)#Gender-bait as to whether there was a better term for this behavior, but there were no alternate suggestions. The external links here (which are essentially References, and should probably be integrated as such sometime (done)) seem to indicate that it is an independent subject worthy of study; they refer to the idea as "Gender swapping" and "gender bending" (though in a different sense than our article on Gender bender, so not mergeable there). I suppose the article could be renamed to Gender swapping, though that seems more ambiguous than the current title (confusable with gender reassignment, I think).
Personally, I'd advocate this as a instance for applying WP:IAR, and letting the WP:neologism stand, but I'm biased as a fan of Gibson. I've asked for comments at Talk:MMORPG, and WikiProject Gender Studies. -- Quiddity (talk) 21:34, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
