Gene Makowsky (born April 17, 1973 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) is an offensive lineman for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He was selected in the second round of the 1995 CFL College draft from the University of Saskatchewan. Makowsky helped the U of S Huskies to two Hardy Cup Championships in his four year tenure at the University, as well as being named to the Canada West All Star team in 1994. Makowsky has played in 193 games in his 12 years as a Roughrider, earning the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award in 2004. He won the award again in 2005. He went to Walter Murray Collegiate, a high school in Saskatoon Saskatchewan.
In 1997, Makowsky served as a Physical Education intern (alongside fellow Huskie alum Brent Schneider) at Saskatoon's Aden Bowman Collegiate, an east-side high school. There, a grade 10 student endowed Makowksy with the rather comical nickname 'Shannon.' Makowksy, of considerable physical presence, also earned the titles 'Igor' and 'McBain' from the high schoolers forced to run laps around the old gym.
After the Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2007 Grey Cup Final, Gene Makowsky was presented the Grey Cup by Commissioner Mark Cohon.
