Gazette van Detroit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gazette van Detroit ("Newspaper of Detroit") is a Belgian newspaper in Dutch and English, published in the United States since 13 August 1914. This newspaper has Flemish immigrants in the USA and Canada as targeted readers.

First it appeared as a daily newspaper, later it became biweekly, often referred to as the "only Belgian biweekly in America".

The newspaper is published by "Gazette van Detroit Belgian Publishing Company Inc." in Roseville, Michigan.

By 2004, celebrating its ninetieth birthday, it is still a popular newspaper amongst Americans with Belgian ancestors and their relatives in Belgium. To date, the Gazette van Detroit has still many subscribers in North America and in Belgium.

In 2006, the Flemish Government donated 12,500 euro to ensure the Gazette van Detroit can continue its operations.[1]

Official Mission Statement of the Gazette van Detroit:.[2]

The Gazette van Detroit is a bridge between Belgium and the United States of America. Its goal is to enhance the social, cultural and commercial ties that exist between the two countries. The Gazette is independent and neutral, i.e. not affiliated with any political or religious organizations. The Gazette provides news from various Belgian social and cultural organizations across the USA, as well as organizations in Belgium that are interested in the historical link between the two countries. It also aims to provide recent immigrants and temporary expatriates with a network of compatriots and relevant information intended to facilitate the transition brought about by a transatlantic move. American and Belgian traditions, cultural events and tourist attractions will be covered. Bilingual features are offered for the benefit of students of Flemish/Dutch or those readers who are trying to keep up their acquaintance with the language. Created by and for Flemish-speaking Belgians, the Gazette aims to maintain a cordial, respectful, and open-minded relationship with French- and German-speaking compatriots and our Dutch neighbors who share our language.
