Gavin Rees (born May 10, 1980 in Newbridge) is a professional boxer. Nicknamed "The Rock", Rees became the WBA super-lightweight World Champion after defeating Souleymane Mbaye in an upset decision win. His trainer is Enzo Calzaghe (who is the father of Joe Calzaghe) and his promoter is Frank Warren.
Enzo has recently stated that Rees is often overlooked. "The ability of this kid is monstrous. The only question is where he goes from here. He’s got a mandatory defence first but I can say this now after that I’ll be looking for Ricky Hatton. Without a question of a doubt." This had led many to believe that Rees may step up to fight Hatton.[1]
Rees lost his title via TKO loss to Andreas Kotelnik in March of 2008. He was well beaten by Kotelnik; the fight ending in the twelfth round via knock-out.
