Garnett S. Stokes

Garnett Sue Stokes, born December 20, 1955 in Washington, D.C. and has served as the Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia since 2004. She is the first female to hold the position of Dean of the Franklin College, the largest of the Colleges of the University. The eldest of four children of James Avery Stokes, a retired USAF Chief Master Sergeant and Ganett Lucile Jackson Stokes.

Ms. Stokes was born in Washington, D.C. where her father served as a Sergeant in the USAF stationed at Andrews AFB and here mother worked at the National Education Association. As is common in a military life, the family moved several times during Sgt. Stokes military career. Ms. Stokes spent time in Covington, Georgia, her paternal ancestry's home, Panama City, Florida, Anchorage, Alaska, Phoenix, Arizona, and Bunker Hill, Indiana prior to High School Graduation. In 1973, Ms. Stokes graduated from Maconaquah High School in Bunker Hill, Indiana. Upon Graduation, she attended Indiana University at Kokomo before transferring to Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee where she majored in Psychology. She graduated in 1977 and was accepted into the graduate Psychology Program at the University of Georgia. She concentrated her studies in the area of Industrial and Organizational Psychology and obtained a Ph.D. in 1981.

Ms. Stokes was hired as an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia after having obtained her Ph.D.
