Gampaha District

Gampaha is a district in Western Province, Sri Lanka. Its area is 1,386.6 km²^[1].

Gampaha district was declared as a new administrative district — separated from Colombo district — in 1978^[2]. Gampaha district is bounded by Kurunegala and Putlam districts from north, Kegalle district from esast, Colombo district from south and by Indian ocean from west^[3]. Gampaha district consist of 13 electorate divisions, including 2 municipal councils, 5 urban counsils, 12 Pradeshiya Sabas (Divisional council) and 1777 Grama Niladari (Village Officer) divisions^[4]. In year 2001, total population in the district was 2,066,096^[5]

Gampaha City is the District Capital of Gampaha District and is a principal town around Colombo. It is about 4 km from Miriswatte on the Colombo Kandy Road. Gampaha is an urban city.
