[edit] History of the Company

Dr Günter Henle, himself an accomplished pianist, felt that few editions at the time accurately reproduced the composer's musical text and that many were marred by unnecessary and often incorrect additions from later editors and arrangers. Thus he founded his own publishing house dedicated to the publishing of urtext editions of classical music. Henle's editions quickly became popular and to date several major artists, including Alfred Brendel, Evgeny Kissin, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yehudi Menuhin, Sabine Meyer, Andrei Gavrilov, Andras Schiff and Igor Oistrakh have publicly voiced their support for and admiration of the Henle publications.

[edit] The Editions

Henle editions are characterized by a bluegray cover and detailed introduction (and/or appendix) on notation used in the edition and research done prior to the publication, noting any discrepancies found between manuscripts and older publications. All publications from Henle prior to the year 2000 were engraved by hand, but since then computer aided scorewriting has taken over.

[edit] The Henle Catalogue

Today (2006) the Henle catalog presents the music of around 50 composers (including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Händel, Haydn, Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Mozart, Scarlatti, Schubert, Robert Schumann and Scriabin to name a few) in just under 1000 books of urtext sheetmusic. These include the complete works of Beethoven, Brahms and Haydn.

Henle also publishes several facsimile editions as well as miscellaneous books on music and composers.
