Construction has begun on this yet-to-be-named covered bridge, which will carry a realigned State Road (C-25) across the Ashtabula River and the Plymouth and Ashtabula Township line in northern Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. At approximately 600 feet (182.9 meters), it will be the longest covered bridge in the United States – a title currently held by the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge in New Hampshire – and the fourth longest covered bridge in the world[1]. The county's 17th publicly accessible covered bridge will cost approximately $7.78 million to construct[2], and will feature a handicapped-accessible second-story walkway[1]. It is being constructed of four 150-foot sections that will rest on concrete abutments and three concrete piers, and will rise more than 80 feet (24.4 meters) over the river and carry two lanes of legal-weight traffic[3]. The bridge will consist of three-foot-thick pieces of Douglas fir or yellow pine, with hemlock or yellow poplar being used for the siding[1]. The location of the existing bridge which carries State Road across the Ashtabula River is located at 41°51′19.584″N, 80°45′43.74″W (41.85544, 80.76215)[4] approximately 1.6 mi (2.5 km) east-southeast of Ashtabula; the new bridge will be located nearby, as State Road will be realigned through the gulf[5]. The bridge is expected to be completed by Fall 2008[3].
A name for this new bridge has not yet been decided upon, as the existing covered bridges in the county are predominantly named for the roads on which they lie; the county already has a State Road Covered Bridge located along a different "State Road" (C-354) over Conneaut Creek in Monroe Township[1].
