Fritz Muhlenweg

Fritz Muhlenweg (also Fritz Mühlenweg) was a German author, born in 1898. His most famous book is 'Big Tiger and Compass Mountain,' published in 1950. It was later shortened and translated into English under the title 'Big Tiger and Christian.'

[edit] Early Life
Fritz Muhlenweg was born in Constance, Germany in 1898. Since his father was a chemist, he was expected to learn chemistry Bielefeld. However, he never took his father's trade to heart. Muhlenweg took over his father's duties after his father died. He left in 1926 and went to Berlin. There, Muhlenweg began to work for Lufthansa, a newly formed airline company.

In 1927, Lufthansa decided to finance an expedition to Central and South Asia in their plans to make an airline connection between Berlin and Beijing. With Sven Hedin as their guide, they would check out meteorological conditions. Muhlenweg joined to expedition as the financial and material manager. He took another trip to Central Asia in the Winter of 1929-1930. Lufthansa wanted him to pick up a German from a meteorological station, where a murder and suicide took place. In 1931, Muhlenweg took his last and longest trip to the area, to observe weather conditionw with a German meteorologist in the Gobi Desert. Unlike his colleagues, who maintained an arrogance of colonialism towards the Chinese and Mongolians they met, he was rather interested in their culture and daily life of the people.

In 1932, Muhlenweg decided to register at the college of art in Vienna. There he met his future spouse, Elisabeth Kopriva. After they married and both finished school, they moved to Allensbach.
