Fractyl was one of the many Maximal protoforms jettisoned from the Axalon before it crashed on prehistoric Earth. Reprogrammed into a Predacon by Megatron, he proved to be a frustrating addition to the cause, because his love of geochemistry remained and he was more interested in Energon than in battle. Barely tolerated by his companions, he spent most of his time out in the field, something that the others preferred.

Fractyl's hopes of solving Energon buildup problems suffered by the Predacons led him to develop Energon armor, a system that allow him to last much longer in battle do to its ability to counteract Energon fields. Unfortunately, it displayed dangerous reactions to raw Energon, capable of causing explosions that could wipe out entire planets. When this system was stolen by the Maximal Packrat, Fractyl temporarily joined forces with Rhinox and others to stop him from reaching a major Energon concentration.
Later, Fractyl was paired with Vice Grip in attacking Packrat and Onyx Primal, who like them were seeking a mysterious artifact that had landed on prehistoric Earth. Both groups were then attacked by Antagony, and Fractyl was forced to retreat.
Though the series was cancelled before it could be shown, Fractyl later became a member of the Wreckers under Primal Prime, and returned with them to Cybertron during the Beast Machines era. After a short time resisting Megatron, they were commissioned by the Oracle to depart Cybertron in search of other Transformers across the galaxy. While most of the team went to secure the Autobot shuttle that would be used for the mission, Fractyl accompanied Primal Prime, Rodimus Prime, and fellow Predacon Spittor to the lair of the female Autobot-turned-Maximal Arcee.
Appealing to Arcee's grief over the loss of her beloved friend Daniel Witwicky, Fractyl attempted to persuade her to join the cause after Primal and Rodimus gave up. Lethally wounded by a Vehicon attack, he was saved by Arcee, who mingled her spark with his, subsequently upgrading him into a Transmetal form. He boarded the Autobot shuttle, only to be wounded again by Devcon. Fortunately, fellow Wrecker Apelinq saved him by creating a medic named CatSCAN.

Tigatron and Fractyl appeared together in the story Wreckers: Finale Part 2 by the Transformers Collectors Club in 2007. During the invasion of Cybertron by the Quintessons Tigatron healed Fractyl of his wounds, but doing so cost Tigatron the power of the Vok bound to his spark. Later when Rodimus was dying from wounds he received battling Cyclonus Tigatron was unable to save the former Autobot leader.
