Once a part of the original Dixie Highway, the former State Road 815 was a 7.76-mile-long north-south route that served - and still serves - as a commuter alternative to the nearby Biscayne Boulevard (US 1-SR 5) that was part of the Florida State Roads system for five decades. Located entirely in Dade County, SR 815 was locally known as Northeast Second Avenue, Southeast Second Avenue, Northeast First Avenue, and Southeast First Avenue.SR 815 was part of SR 909 before having its own State Road number . Most Street Signs today on The former State Road indicate it as "NE 2ND AVE" but some "W DIXIE HWY" or "OLD DIXIE HWY", since the road was part of Pre-1945 SR 4. Strangely, Going Westbound on Northeast 82nd Street (SR 934) at Ne 2nd Ave there are signs indicating the road as US1 ALT . Like North Miami Avenue, The road is very close to US1 and is a good alternative to US1 but is not officially designated as such .

The northern terminus of SR 815 was an intersection of Northeast 2nd Avenue and Gratigny Road (SR 924) just south of the Northern Terminus, SR 909 Began its northbound journey at Northeast 2nd Avenue ; the southern terminus was an intersection of Southeast Second Avenue and Southeast 2nd Street (Southbound US 1) . After the construction and opening of Interstate 95 and the Downtown Distributor (SR 970), the Downtown Miami Traffic patterns changed .

Created in the 1945 Florida State Road renumbering, SR 815 started to fade in significance in the 1980s even though it remained a commuting and commercial alternative. First, the designation was removed from the southern half of the route; by 1994 it was barely noted on AAA and Rand McNally road maps; the following year, the Florida Department of Transportation transferred SR 815 maintenance responsibilities to Dade (now Miami-Dade) County control.

Ne 2nd Ave is mostly 4 lanes, 2 lanes in some parts . Southbound SR 815 would follow Northeast Second Avenue until SE 2ND ST, where Southbound US1 would turn left onto 2nd Ave until curving Southwest and becoming Brickell Ave . But northbound SR 815 traffic went north on Southeast (and Northeast) First Avenue from Southeast First Street to Northeast 17th Street, then returning to Northeast Second Avenue. Continuing Northbound the road curved slightly Northeast paralleling Florida East Coast Railroad tracks until NE 36TH ST, where it curved back onto NE 2ND AVE and continued its Northbound Journey .
