Coordinates: Flandrau State Park is a Minnesota state park on the Cottonwood River just outside of New Ulm.
Originally named Cottonwood State Park, the park was established in 1934 to provide unemployment relief through its construction. The main project was to construct a dam on the Cottonwood River to provide a lake for recreational purposes. There are very few natural lakes in this section of the state, so building a lake afforded opportunities for fishing, swimming, canoeing, and boating. The dam, as well as the buildings, were constructed by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Due to periodic flooding problems, the dam was removed in 1995. The buildings were constructed of a colorful local quartzite and designed to reflect the German heritage of nearby New Ulm.
In 1945 the park was renamed to honor Charles Eugene Flandrau, an important figure in the Battles of New Ulm during the Dakota War of 1862."[1]
