[edit] Fish Portal created !!
Yes, the fish portal is born!! I would like to give credits to the The Cats Portal, The Dogs Portal and the The Sharks Portal. The fish portal is modelled after these excellent portals. --Melanochromis 06:20, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
-
- And also India Portal too. --Melanochromis 13:19, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Template:fishportal
I created this template for the fish portal to congratulate and show appreciation to editors of articles that appear in the portal. Each month, there will be 3 articles: "Selected article of the month" "Selected fish of the month" and "Selected picture of the month" To use this, just post the {{fishportal|SECTION|MONTH|YEAR}} in the discussion section of the article. Note that you have to fill in the braces
- 1) SECTION of the portal that the article appears,
- 2) MONTH, and
- 3) YEAR.
For example, the template {{Fishportal|Selected TEST of the month|December|2006}} would look like this:
cheers --Melanochromis 23:50, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Question. How would you put this banner onto a commons image? Would there have to be a separate template created in commons? Cheers! --Jnpet (talk) 06:18, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Great work!
Good work with this portal, Melanochromis! As Rfrisbie says, it already looks up to featured standard. I'm sure it will go through if you nominate it. riana_dzasta 03:58, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, riana_dzasta. It took me hours and hours to figure out how to make the portal work like Rfrisbie's cats and dogs portal. I'm talking to Rfrisbie now and I hope I could learn some more tricks. At the moment, the fish portal still needs more works. Then we'll see if it will or will not get the featured. --Melanochromis 08:17, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Okay, it looks like we have a quarum here! :-) Rfrisbietalk 15:33, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Featured portal tips
Please add any tips here on how this page can be improved to Featured portal status. Thanks. Rfrisbietalk 13:08, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- As I said before - really, really excellent work! I can't think of anything to object to, at all. Question, though - are such new portals usually promoted to featured status? If so, I'm sure it will go through :) riana_dzasta 13:29, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Really nice! Some suggestions:
I don't like the positioning of the sections. Please split it to subpages like done on Portal:Science, this can be used as a ToC as well.- I've striked this suggestion for now, I really like the new positioning. Michaelas10 (Talk) 18:39, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Replace the image of a drawn fish at the beginning with an image of a real fish, I suggest a goldfish.
- Remove the "web resources" section, this belongs in the WikiProject. Michaelas10 (Talk) 14:42, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Only things I can see:
- The "Web Resources" section could be deleted.
- Change to a fish photo on the top right. My suggestion would be Image:Goldfish2.cropped.jpg. Otherwise, this looks wonderful. Great work! Badbilltucker 15:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Looks good. I like the layout and the chioce of color, its very apeasing to the eye. Some sugestions I have for improvement:
- Add three periods before the text for the comments in the "Did you Know?" section; its done that way on the main page and I think its should be done that way here too.
- Expand the Featured material; having only one article/FP does not look to good from a Featured Portal Candidate standpoint.
- As per the others, the "Web Resources" part ought to be moved to the project page. TomStar81 (Talk) 15:44, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't mind the logo as opposed to an actual fish. Probably saves worrying which of thousands of fish to use. However, see if you can do something about the way that 'Associated Wikimedia' and 'Related Portals' overlap each other at lower resolutions... the 800x600 users get cranky when things don't work right for them. --CBD 16:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Wow...I don't know what to say, It looks simply excellent. — Seadog 18:11, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
My tips:
- A real picture of a fish, instead of a logo.
- Fish news--Add a news website link, so people can have access to the actual news source
- Instead of using 4-5 small images at DYK, consider consolidating it to two large images
Add {{purgepage}} link at bottom.Did that myself.Add view, talk, edit, history link for Things you can do template.Did it myself.- Besides those few small things, everything looks good. =) Nishkid64 22:57, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
This is a great portal! However, this has been mentioned before, the introduction needs a real picture of a fish. s d 3 1 4 1 5 final exams! 23:32, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thank you for the feedback
Hi everyone. Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm surprised and overwhelmed to see a lot of feedback this quick. Thanks again. I'll do my best to accommodate your suggestions. But first, I just like to explain why I came up with those things you saw on the portal.
- The logo you saw on the portal is not just ornamental, it has a practical purpose as well. This logo is also used for the fish portal template (see above) as well as the Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes template which is placed on the talk pages of several hundreds of fish articles which would link back to this portal. Here's how the template looks like:
- Monthly "selected" sections have nominations systems (see example here). The current "selected" sections are:
-
- * "Selected fish of the month" (this is an article about a particular species or group of fish)
- * "Selected article of the month" (anything else related to fish such as fishkeeping, fish in culture, fishery, etc.)
- * "Selected picture of the month"
- * "Selected quote"
Please keep posting your feedback. Cheers, --Melanochromis 23:46, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- This is one of the best new portals I've seen - I usually use Portal:London as the basis for a good start but it doesn't have a thing on this one. It has my full support for an WP:FPORT nomination. DJR (T) 00:00, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I understand that the idea is to have a logo for the portal and maybe project (at least use the portal logo on other pages) but i still think that a photo of what a fish is would be a better thing to have in the intro section. I made a quick test design for a logo at Image:Fish portal logo.png. I am not too sure about this myself at the moment though. Chris_huhtalk 01:02, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- That reminds me of another version of Image:Darwin fish.svg. Rfrisbietalk 01:15, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
As many reviewers requested, I replaced the logo on the portal with an image of a real fish. Image:Tuna.jpg is used. This picture goes perfectly with the color theme of the portal and it does represent what a typical fish look like. --Melanochromis 12:37, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I've thrown in some nominations for article, photo, and featured fish. Everyone vote! --Terrapin83 07:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I've noticed that the old fish portal icon still exists in some places like in Wikiproject: Fishes; these should probably be changed.--Terrapin83 08:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
-
- Thanks a lot for the nominations. I really like the discus picture you chose. However, the anabantoidei article probably should be nominated to the "selected fish of the month." I'll move it if that's ok with you. The fish portal logo is still used in small templates including the banner. This is simply to save space. For example, the banner (see above) is also crammed with texts, it would probably help the readers more when the logo is used (as opposed to picture + more texts). --Melanochromis 11:09, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] common names
- Fish common names are all in lower case (except where they start a sentence, or are a proper noun). I notice that many of the fish names in the Portal (Selected topics, Things you can do) are capitalised. I think this should be fixed - happy to do this if you want to let me know. Excellent site. GrahamBould 14:03, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
hi GrahamBould. Thanks for visiting the portal. The portal main page is just a structure, most of the contents you see are actually from subpages. To edit the subpages, click "edit" which is usually on the top right corner of each section. But I'll just give you the shortcuts:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes/to do - this "to do" subpage appears on both WikiProject Fishes and the fish portal.
- Portal:Fish/Fish topics - "selected topics about fish". Note that all topic names are capitalized, not just fish common names. If you think they should be uncapitalized, then please uncapitalize other topics too (except taxinomy names), just to be consistent.
And since you're already offering help, I hope it's not too much to ask you to also vote and/or nominate contents for the portal next month. Here are the shortcuts:
- "Selected article of the month" nominations
- "Selected fish of the month" nominations
- "Selected picture of the month" nominations
- "Selected quote" nominations
Thanks a lot !! --Melanochromis 14:39, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Picture of the Month
Hi! I think this portal looks great! I was also pleasantly surprised to see a photograph I had taken as the featured picture of the month. Perhaps it's a minor point, but the cedit was solely given to Olegiwit who edited the original image, but shouldn't the original photographer also be credited? Or is credit only given to the last editor/uploader of the image? For comparisons here is the link to the original image [Image:Pterois volitans Manado.JPG] Jnpet 16:39, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for pointing out. I have corrected the credit. --Melanochromis 00:09, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Recent changes of the fish portal according to the reviewers
- Replace the logo with an image of real fish
- Done. Image:Tuna.jpg is used.
- Remove the "Web resources" section.
- Done.
- Use standard "Did you know" format.
- Done.
- Expand number of "Selected" content items.
- Contents are selected at the beginning of each month via the nominations/voting systems (see example here). At the moment, there are already many nominated articles waiting to be selected.
- Fix layout for 800X600 displays.
- Done.
- Add news item link(s).
- In progress. Update (May 03, 2007): This section is entirely removed due to lack of significant fish-related news stories in the mainstream media as well as to give space to DYK and other more popular section.

[edit] Some more improvements
- I think Fish is singular. If yes, then please make appropriate changes in Introduction section and the article itself.
-
- Noted. The 'Introduction' was a part of the fish article, changes should be made there first. This portal will follow the article, for the purpose of consistency.
- Reduce image size for the present article.
-
- Which article? The introduction or other sections?
- Where is the Selected fish for January?
-
- The articles at Portal:Fish are of current month. Also see the nomination and voting system for candidates for future selections and the archives for the past selections.
- Limit image size to "300px" in Selected pictures. Present image size could be reduced to 200/220 px.
-
- This is probably a matter of aesthetic preferences. In my opinion, the showcase picture should not be small. I think 300px is quite ok for most pictures.
- Use refernces in the News.
-
- I agree. In progress.
- DYK seems very big section. They are long sentences. Could they be shortened? I would say to use single image at a time in the section.
-
- Noted. Will be determined.
- Merging Fish lists in the Topics section could be a better idea.
-
- Is that really necessary? Even featured portals didn't merge the lists and the topics.
- Add Wikipedia:WikiProject Mammals, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cetaceans in WikiProjects.
-
- I have to disagree. Fish are not mammals.
- Add Portal:Cetaceans in Related portals. Shyam (T/C) 09:40, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
-
- Portal:Cetaceans, unlike Portal:Sharks or Portal:Marine life, is neither a parent, a descendant or an overlapping portal of the fish portal. The fish portal already has a link to Portal:Biology, where one can find many other portals including Portal:Cetaceans.
Replied by --Melanochromis 01:08, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- I haven't read to see if these issues have been brought up...
-
- News articles should have a source or better, link to.
- Fish lists, the "List of" should be implied being within a "list of" box.
- Same with Wikiprojects box.
- Same with the title of the topics box. Should simply be "Selected topics" since we are on the fish portal.
- Other than that, looks good, colors are nice. Joe I 06:09, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi Joe. Thanks for the comments.
-
- News sources. I agree. In progress.
- Lists, wikiprojects, topics. I agree and have fixed it. Now they all follow the same format
Cheers, --Melanochromis 20:02, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Update (3 May 2007)
- News section removed entirely as there aren't many significant news stories related to fish in the mainstream media as well as to give space to DYK and other sections.
- the new wikiproject Fishing has been added --Melanochromis 17:39, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Gars...poison eggs and flesh?
I know gar eggs are toxic, but how about the gar itself?
[edit] The Fish Quiz
I'm happy to announce that the Fish Portal has added a new feature - The Fish Quiz!! Come test your knowledge, interact with other fish editors, try to win the game and have your name honored in the Hall of Fame, and have a fun break from editing wikipedia. Cheers --Melanochromis 08:37, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Featured portal
The Fish Portal is finally a Featured portal!. I'd like to thank the reviewers and everyone else who has contributed to this portal. Special credits go to User:Rfrisbie who helped with the early development of this portal. And User:Ginkgo100, User:Jnpet, and User:Terrapin83 who have consistently nominated and selected monthly contents. Thank you, thank you, thank you. --Melanochromis 02:42, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The Fish Portal: Mini Edition
I'm glad to announce that the The Fish Portal: Mini Edition is available for you to use on your wikipedia user page or talk page. It uses minimum space, and can be fit in a tight spot of a user page, but retains many crucial features of the portal including:
- "Selected contents" - links to articles and images of the month.
- "Random fish" - a randomized DYK that will change each time you purge the page. You can purge your page by clicking the small arrow symbol in the template.
- "Useful links" - links to the full edition portal, the fish quiz, as well as all the associated wikiprojects and their talk pages and tasklists.
To use it, place {{Portal:Fish/Mini portal}} on the designated page. See here for an example of the mini portal on my user page. The placed template looks like this (note that size is not fixed and the width can be adjusted according to the available space):
selected contents | random fish↑ | useful links |
|
Guppy, one of the most popular aquarium fishes, was named after Robert John Lechmere Guppy (1836-1916) who discovered this tiny fish in Trinidad in 1866. |
