Fishtailing

Fishtailing (also called tank slapping) is a problem which occurs with rear wheel drive vehicles on low friction roads (due to rain, snow, ice, gravel, etc.) or when too much power is applied for the driving conditions. During fishtailing, the rear end of the car will swing from side to side. In drifting, controlled fishtailing (power slide) is considered a good thing.
A similar behaviour occurs in heavy braking, because of weight transfer, depending on the distribution of the braking force and on the weight distribution, but independent of which wheels are being driven.
Most modern rear-wheel drive cars however, solve this problem by using a form of traction control.
Fishtailing is also a term for the police pursuit technique of deliberately inducing rear instability in a suspect vehicle (see PIT manoeuvre).
