Featherweight (MMA)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The featherweight division in mixed martial arts generally groups competitors within 136 to 145 lb (61 to 66 kg). The featherweight division is popularly utilized by Pancrase; TKO, a Quebec-based promotion; U.S.-based King of the Cage, where it is known as the bantamweight division; and Shooto, where it is known as the lightweight division; and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). The featherweight limit, as defined by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, is 145 lb (66 kg).[1]
Due to the lack of a featherweight division in many of the larger promotions (e.g., PRIDE and UFC), many 145-pound fighters have either moved up, or are considering moving up in weight to the lightweight division to compete. Such fighters include Mark Hominick, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, and Gilbert Melendez.
