[edit] Family Day, Chinese New Year

Is Family Day linked to Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year is on February 19, 2007 and Chinese New Year is on February 18, 2007.

Is Family Day just an inclusive name for the day to include all people and not just those of Chinese descent? 216.187.69.197 20:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

No. It's purely coincidental this year. Family Day is for all Albertans.

[edit] Family Day Concept

To reinterate what was said by the first commentor, there needs to be more information about Family Day. It's not really clear as to what the holiday is supposed to be about, what people are supposed to do on that day, or how the holiday spread from its regional beginnings. There is some good information about who started the holiday, but more needs to be added. SailorAlphaCentauri 15:56, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

since it is a fairly new holiday I'm sure there's not many entrenched traditions. it's a day meant for you to to spend with your family. though, that's pretty self-explanatory.216.234.58.18 14:37, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I don't agree. It is a long weekend. There is not much more to it. Trying to explain family day traditions is like trying to explain the tradition of labor day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.63.185.180 (talk) 22:01, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Family Day, like Mother's Day or Father's Day. While these two are not worldwide holidays and people don't get days off for them, they are days to honour your parents. Family Day is to spend with your family. It's not like Christmas or New Year's in which there is vast historical evidence of celebrations. Valentine's Day is filled with tradition, but it's not a vacation day. Ultimately, it was created (in Canada at least) as a legislated holiday and thus there isn't any precedence for its name, or its method or date of observance. --WPaulB (talk) 20:02, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

How do you talk about the "traditions", etc., of a day that most people just view as a day off work? It was created to draw attension from a political scandal, and is mostly just used as a little break from work in late winter. Kids also get the thursday / friday leading up to it off from school (as professional development days, I think). I don't really know anyone who does anything for Family Day. --142.242.2.248 (talk) 15:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Getty scandal source

I've added a source for the Getty drug scandal, however I'm concerned that the source is almost word-for-word the same as this, suggesting either the source I posted got its information from here, or that this article has potential copyvio content. I'm just a "drive-by" editor on this one so someone more familiar with the topic will need to look into this. 68.146.41.232 (talk) 14:59, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Level of Government

I think that Family Day is a provincial holiday, at least in Ontario. Shouldn't the lead in the Canada section say that, rather than that it is federal

[edit] Giant Dick Day

Can't work out if this is an Aussie term or a vandalism 129.67.125.194 (talk) 23:56, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
