Fairfax New Zealand is New Zealand's largest media company, best known for its daily publication The Press in Christchurch (voted the best newspaper in New Zealand for 2006 and 2007).
Fairfax Media established its operation on the 1 July 2003 purchase of the publishing assets of Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL).
These assets include nine daily newspapers including The Dominion Post and The Press, two national Sunday papers, a stable of magazines with particular strength in the lifestyle category, a magazine publishing business and an internet operation. Fairfax Media also publish over 60 community newspapers throughout the country.
These latest assets join those of the parent company Fairfax Media Ltd. Their mastheads include the prestigious Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review.
History of Independent Newspapers Ltd
INL evolved out of the Wellington Publishing Company Limited which was founded in 1906 to publish Wellington’s morning daily newspaper, The Dominion.
Through a series of acquisitions it became New Zealand’s largest media company owning nine daily newspapers and two Sunday newspapers, an extensive stable of free community papers, a range of magazines, an internet operation, a magazine distribution business. The assets of these businesses were sold to Australian publisher Fairfax Holdings Ltd, effective July 1, 2003.
INL’s acquisition activity commenced in the 1970’s including the purchase of Truth (NZ) Ltd, Wellington’s evening paper The Evening Post (which merged with The Dominion in 2002 to form The Dominion Post), the Evening Standard (Manawatu), The Southland Times, the Press, The Nelson Evening Mail, The Marlborough Express, The Timaru Herald and most of the newspapers owned by NZ News Ltd. The latter incorporated the Auckland Star, The Sunday Star and New Zealand’s largest group of free community papers.
In 1990 INL purchased Gordon and Gotch, an Australian and New Zealand magazine distribution business, although it subsequently sold the Australian operation in 1999.
INL maintained significant links with The News Corporation (“News”), the Australian based global media company. The relationship dates back to 1964 when News purchased a 29.8% stake in the Wellington Publishing Company.
The company is a division of John Fairfax Holdings, a major Australian media company, whose major papers include the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review.
