Talk:Exploding bird

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eh? In 24HPP, the Ryders feed birds bread laced with rat poison causing them to die, not explode. And I -HAVE- just checked the DVD to make sure. --Kiand 16:55, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

My apologies, obviously a faulty memory. Could have sworn it was bicarbonate of soda though. Leithp 19:04, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Weasel words

I love the article, but we need to remove the weasel words like "some people think", etc. - Ta bu shi da yu 05:34, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Birds can burp?

I was always under the impression that they were incapable of doing so! hmm, do we have any sources? Tekana | Talk 08:40, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

"Always under the impression" doesn't count for much. Obviously any animal capable of ingesting food can easily expel any resulting gases, one way or another, you just don't hear it. It's not like there's any sort of one-way valve.--Shantavira 14:18, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
"Obviously" doesn't count for much either. Rats can't burp. (http://www.ratbehavior.org/vomit.htm). Eleven even (talk) 09:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sodium

This article seems to reference an article snopes.com to show that Alka-seltzer and similar agents can't make a bird explode. Although snopes mentions Alka-Seltzer can't make seagulls explode it makes no note about sodium. The sodium bicarbonate in Alka-Seltzer isn't the same as sodium the element.

"Sodium reacts exothermically with water: small pea-sized pieces will bounce across the surface of the water until they are consumed by it, whereas large pieces will explode."

A seagull can't burp away an explosion. And so the story goes,

Wrap sodium in bread and feed it to a seagull and it will explode.

I heard of this practice being done by sailors or navy men. Reliable references of this are hard to find.

[edit] Explosion in "Shrek"

In the DreamWorks animated feature film Shrek, a bird explodes as a result of Fiona's high-pitched singing.

That makes the bird sound like an unfortunate wine-glass in a MythBusters episode. Didn't the bird explode while trying to out-sing her instead? Andjam 10:38, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

You're right. I've corrected it at last.--Shantavira 14:26, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] dead link

I'm too lazy to remove this myself so I just thought I should let ya'll know that the link to the video of the pird getting hit by the fastball is as dead as the bird. If someone could find a link for it that's still up and replace it then that would be super. 07:28, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Totse.com

On here, is a article discribing Alka Seltzer to make Seagulls explode. Also if you get caught, you will end up in jail. 65.173.105.125 19:49, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article should be deleted

This is the kind of article which gives Wiki a bad name. The reference to Snopes.com doesn't lead to the material (although the Discussion link does), and causes an advertising pop-up, and the link to the Straight Dope article explicitly says that the whole issue is probably "BS".

The writing is a mess of triva, urban legends and conjecture, and includes things that have nothing to do with exploding birds, per se, such as the Skinner project.
