Evil Eye of Avalon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evil Eye of Avalon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Evil Eye of Avalon (sometimes merely referred to as the Evil Eye) is a fictional potent mystical magical artifact in the Marvel Universe. It first appeared in Fantastic Four #54 (Sep 1966) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

The Evil Eye is a power object that was intended to be a weapon against the Fomor. It can manipulate & disintegrate matter, project blasts of concussive force, laser-like and disintegrating rays, and create or destroy force fields. It also possesses dimensional- and time- travel powers.

The Avengers were summoned to the past to trick the Fomor into unleashing Balor. The Evil Eye lacked a power source, so the plan was to use Balor to power the Eye. A time-travelling Black Knight planned to use the Eye to defeat the Fomor; however, because the Eye drained all of Balor's essence, whoever used the Eye would be destroyed. Whitman was possessing his ancestor Eobar Garrington at the time, and when he used the Eye to drive the Fomor from Avalon, Garrington died and Whitman returned to his own time.[1]

The Evil Eye was later presented to Prester John by the people of Avalon in the 12th century. He used the Eye against Kang the Conqueror, who had travelled back in time to coerce Prester John to ally with him to conquer the 20th century. Prester John also used the Eye against a time-travelling Eric Masterson. Prester John then returned to Avalon and went into suspended animation.

In the modern era, the Human Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot stumbled into Avalon and inadverntenly revived Prester John, who attacked them with the Evil Eye. The Torch stole the Eye, but as it was about to overload Wyatt knocked the Eye out of Johnny's grasp just before it exploded.

Balor was freed from the Evil Eye by Morgan le Fay. He battled Doctor Strange, the Black Knight, and Victoria Bentley. His body dissipated when the Black Knight destroyed the Evil Eye.[2]

The Evil Eye is one of the twelve items of power sought by the heroes of the Marvel and DC Universe in the JLA/Avengers miniseries.
