Erina Goldsmith (エリナ・ゴールドスミス Erina Gorudosumissu?) (Also called Eririn) is a fictional character from the Variable Geo series.

Contents

[edit] Background

Erina, although a full-blooded American, was born and raised in Osaka. As such, she tends to act like a somewhat stereotypical Osakan. She is loud, outspoken, and fond of baudy humor. She owns and operates her own restaurant, The Rival, and fights in the V.G. tournaments in hopes of bringing her paternal grandmother (Who still lives in the United States) to live with her in Japan. She and the other waitresses at The Rival dress in bunny outfits, complete with ears and cotton tails.

Erina practices no particular martial art, but instead fights using methods derived from years of street brawling which she took up to vent her anger at her treatment by others due to a kind of prejudice commonly shown by Japanese towards foreigners. She punctuates her brutal assaults with flashy, almost acrobatic diving kicks and rapid flurries of punches. She also possesses the ability to channel her ki energy into a cigarette lighter she keeps on her person at all times, unleashing a torrent of flames to burn her enemies with.

[edit] Fictional Character History

[edit] Before V.G.

Although born in Osaka and given a Japanese name, Erina was often the subject of inherent racism and was bullied and teased for being an American in Japanese society. After enduring this for several years, she turned to street fighting in order to vent her frustrations and became a hardened, ruthless brawler because of it.

Some time later, she opened The Rival as a way to make ends meet. She hires other girls who are the subject of ridicule as her waitresses, and as they respect her as their leader, they also go along with all of her violent tendencies, as such, anyone who attempts to harass any of The Rival's "Bunnies" is severely beaten.

[edit] Advanced V.G.

Erina enters the tournament for several reasons, the most notable being to promote The Rival, and to use the prize money and free real estate to bring her grandmother to Japan so that she can look after her in her old age. She strikes up a rivalry with Jun Kubota, who tends to exhibit the same kind of racism that Erina had dealt with for so long, although they both have violent personalities which also contribute to their feud. Although defeated by Yuka Takeuchi near the tournament's end, Erina manages to strike up friendships with Manami Kusunoki and Ayako Yuuki, who are also from Osaka. She vows to keep trying until she is able to bring her Grandmother to Japan.

[edit] Advanced V.G. 2

Erina puts aside her feud with Jun in order to attempt to help Yuka snap out of an emotional breakdown the latter had after watching K-1 and K-2 die at the end of the previous tournament. When Jun easily defeats Yuka due to her being unable to tap into her spiritual powers, Tamao Mitsurugi, a devoted fan of Yuka's and up and coming V.G. combatant flies into a rage and challenges her. Erina decides to help Jun out, and the two face Tamao in a two versus one match. Despite having the advantages of numbers and experience, Jun and Erina are both defeated and Yuka eventually regains her will to fight.

After this, Jun and Erina's rivalry becomes a much more friendly one, and Erina introduces her new friend to her grandmother when she comes for a visit.

[edit] Other Appearances

Erina is also a playable character in V.G. II: Bout of Cabalistic Goddess, Super V.G., and V.G. Custom. She appears in Tamao's "Silver Parrot" stage in V.G. Max wearing her street clothes, where she is constantly laughing and accidentally hitting Kyoko Kirishima in the head. All of these appearances occur outside of the regular series' canon.

[edit] Anime

Erina also makes an appearance as a minor antagonist in the second part of a three-episode OVA series based on the games. She is voiced by Yūko Nagashima.

Erina makes a grand entrance being held aloft by several of her bunny-suited subordinates when Yuka and Jun, having been brought to Osaka by a mysterious phone call are sitting at a roadside food stand with Manami, who joined up with them when they arrived in town. Displaying one of her characteristic flip-flops from serious to silly, she introduces herself in a threatening manner, then suddenly smiles brightly and tells the group that "You can call me Eririn!". while Yuka, Jun, and Manami are dumbfounded by this, Erina orders her entourage to attack them in order to see if they're good enough for her to fight herself.

Manami and Jun repell the bunnies, and Jun suggests that Erina fight Yuka, who is stronger than either of them. During the ensuing bout, Erina displays a mastery of ki by summoning several orbs of flame from the lighter concealed between her breasts, having them surround a confused Yuka, and bombard her with fire. When Yuka wonders how Erina's attacks can be so powerful, the bunny-suited brawler reveals that it is because her power comes from all of the sorrow and hatred she has dealt with. Hearing this, Yuka concentrates, and, by reading Erina's mind and viewing her memories of ridicule, is able to understand and accept Erina's power, becoming immune to it. She absorbs all of Erina's power and throws it back at her with her kikoudan technique.

As Erina stumbles to the ground, she sees a vision of her grandmother telling her to let go of her anger and return to being a kind, sweet person. She accepts her loss and asks Yuka's name, upon hearing which, she exclaims that Manami was the one she was supposed to fight. Manami admits to having called Yuka to Osaka to have her fight Erina instead because she felt that she would stand no chance of winning against Erina. While Jun becomes angry with Manami, Erina laughs it off and leads her bunnies in a group strip as acknowledgement that Yuka has beaten her.

[edit] Trivia

  • Erina's name is often also written in English as Elena and Eleanor, among other variants due to improper romanization of her name, which is written in katakana.
  • In several of Erina's endings throughout the series, she forms a manzai comedy act with Jun after bringing her Grandmother to Japan.
  • Erina speaks with a heavy Osaka-ben accent. Her OVA seiyuu, Yūko Nagashima, also used this accent in her role as Caldina in the anime series Magic Knight Rayearth.
